The first of the year is always a good time for further signs of impending apocalypse.

Classic new wave-era art provocateurs Devo have licensed their songs and image to Disney, so that the group may be reborn as Dev2.0 [Devo 2.0] The new group will consist of 10 to 12 year olds, both boys and girls. Some of the songs will be lyrically toned down ( Read more... )

I'll grant you that the video is disturbing, but Mark Mothersbaugh has been laying the groundwork for this for years: if you look at his IMDB listing you can see that he did the music for Rugrats and lots of other kids movies and video games. Like Oingo Boingo refugee Danny Elfman before him, he's wrapped himself in the profitable Hollywoodland of film scoring years ago.

Though I do have to say this'll make my friend Ron really happy ;-)

He most recently scored 'The Ringer', and I really hope it was him that brought in the band 'The Kids of Whidney High' (an actual band of developmentally disabled kids that makes two appearances in the movie).

Before this Mothersbaugh's most significant contribution to the subversion of America's children was his scoring work on PeeWee's Playhouse.

I used/still am a huge fan of Devo, and right after Shout came out at the end of the 1980s and they sort of disappeared for a while, the Mothersbaugh brothers and the Casale broterhs did one interview at a showing of Mark's neon art. Mark spent the entire time talking about how they were looking at doing Saturday Morning cartoons (this was before the animation resurgence post-Roger Rabbit).

Artistic integrity 0, money so that you can eat 3.

Next Disney will add a tomboy to the group to make them more accessable to the target audience.....
