Being British

So I finally bit the bullet and handed over the £700 it takes to become a citizen of this country… erm collection of states… kingdom… uh whatever it is. It’s only just now at this very second as I typed that first line that I realised I have no idea what Great Britain actually is.

It’s not a country, it’s a collection of countries… well not ( Read more... )

you win the award for longest comments, Fred. You have obviously put a lot more thought into this subject than I have! :-)

Well I'm kinda touchy on the topic of reactionary British nationalism - maybe it's my fiery Mick temper. For further rants see thisengland.wordpress.com

come on, dude, I have to put a good and proper British whinge/diss in this thing every now and again. It's in my contract. I promise the next one will be more brit friendly... It's on my trip to Switzerland with limey lads. Right, maybe the one after that will be more brit friendly, it's on canal boating. Yeah, look out for that one, you won't know what to do with all the Britain big upping.

You seem to know more about the history of "great britain" than me, and i've lived here since 1974. Maybe they should give me £700 to bugger off.

haha. I highly doubt I know more about Britain than you. Unless of course you've been living in a cave under Nottingham castle or summat... actually, you would probably still know more about Britain than me.

I was relying on that test to teach me some British stuff. Boy, I couldn't picked a worse source. I do know a lot about April Fools day though, I fucking kicked ass at those two questions.

That's actually pretty good, I like that. Definitely better than any other definition I've seen.

As per the Canada/Quebec thing, Quebec is not its own country. I think they are officially called a "distinct society within a united Canada" or something. I'm sure you'll correct me on that, but as far as I know, they are equal to the other provinces in the eyes of government except for the fact that all the signs in Quebec must be in French.

They also seem to have a lot more cheesy fries, smoked meat, strip joints and bagels than the rest of the country.

Thanks for the welcome.
