There's still pain on our side in our relationship with God. I suppose it is because we are human and flawed, but our lack of understanding makes it painful, sometimes, to follow him because there can be a lot of disappointment and feelings of neglect even if it's only perceived.

That's a good point. I guess I was focused on pain that's actually caused by the other person as opposed to perceived to be caused by the other person. In that respect, we know that what he does is always for our well being. But you're right, that pain is still pain even though the root cause is in our perception of His intentions.

After thinking about it, I think a better way to phrase my thoughts is to say that if perception were absolutely true on both sides, the only one who would be hurt in the relationship would be Him.

I suppose. Although his hurt is not like we know hurt, I don't think. He understands all of our intentions and motivations. There's never confusion about our actions. He never has disappointment or expectations that are unmet.
