More of Dead Can Dance lifting Joy Division lyrics

Jun 12, 2008 18:16

Some of you might recall this post where I show how some lyrics from "The Carnival is Over" by Dead Can Dance were made in allusion to "The Eternal" by Joy Division.

Guess what? I found another one. From "Tell Me About the Forest (That You Once Called Home)" by Dead Can Dance:

I believe in the ways of an older law ( Read more... )

geekitude, dcd, music, joy division

I can't believe I never noticed that. I am a pretty big Joy Division fan and a medium big DCD fan.

I only noticed because my iPod shuffled the SWANS cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" just a couple songs before "Tell Me About the Forest", so one was fresh in my head when the other came on.

As a long time Joy Division fan (I own a copy of "House of Dolls", a reference I can never drop in casual conversation) I have seen lots of lifting. I'm ok with Dead can Dance, I have some albums but don't listen much anymore. At some point I decided they were a bit to melodramatic for me. (just sayin) But have you heard this band "She wants Revenge?" It's like they just wanted to be Joy Division when they grew up, but couldn't write lyrics. At all. Sad, really, because they could cover 24 hours pretty well if you ask me.

I have to admit that I'm really not much of a Joy Division fan. I've tried, but everything I've heard was a little too monotonous for me. Different strokes, and all. I already listen to a lot of SWANS, so I'm kinda full up on the super-duper depresso stuff.

Yeah...DCD can be very melodramatic. There's a lot of "Look at us! We are amazing melodramatic gothy world music artists!" going on in there, but I still enjoy it a fair amount. Actually, to be really clear, I like Brendan Perry. All the songs of theirs I love and listen to are his big, powerful epics like "Xavier" and "Tell Me About the Forest"

You'd be surprised at the amount of line snagging that goes on, actually. I know I've heard lots of Cure lines lifted. ("The shallow drowned lose less than we" as one in particular.) And yeah, DCD's homage to Joy Division is pretty obvious. I also want to say Smashing Pumpkins have been lifted, but it's been a looong time.

It's a metagame in itself, really!

P.S. I also happen to really like She Likes Revenge, particularly "Tear You Apart" unlike the above poster. But there again, if I'm looking for lyrics, I tend to head for VNV Nation. *shrug*

*She Wants Revenge. Damn that whole "unpaid accounts can't edit comments" thing.

What song did you hear those Cure lyrics lifted in? I'm trying to find it now. I'm kinda curious.
