Thoughts on Battlestar Galactica Season 2 Finale

Battlestar Galactica (BSG) is a show that, since its inception, has made me realize what a brilliant writer Ronald Moore is. On top of that, it also made me realize why the Star Trek franchise is doomed. That tale, however, is for another day ( Read more... )

The Season 2 Finale was highly disconcerting to me... mostly because of the 1 year jump ahead. We've had short jump aheads... perhaps a few weeks or months, but nothing like this. And then wham.. all the characters have been drastically changed and a few moments later, the Cylons have taken over. Too much change in a short time span (especially considering all of the slower moving character building episodes this season... which I have appreciated).

Maybe Season 3 will open with it having been a bad dream? Because that's almost what it seemed like.. a dream sequence.

The dream sequence-like factor contributed to my picking on it as being too David Lynch. I hope it's not a dream sequence. The would be the paragon of retarded. Dream sequences are so stupid that they're considered one of the "top ten mistakes of student films" by some.

I doubt it's a dream sequence. It was definitely done in such a style as to make it seem unreal, though. I certainly hope Moore has a plan for getting out of what he just got into.

I hope so too. And yup, the dream sequence is equivalent with jumping sharks, evil twins and time travel plot lines :)

Oh.. and on the NBC thing. I have mixed feelings on that. On one hand, higher production and HDTV airing would be awesome. But I worry about NBC screwing with it and making it too mainstream since it would not be aimed specifically at sci-fi geeks. *cringe* The thought of the return of Daggitt type stuff just doesn't sit well with me.

I actually have a hypothesis that NBC knows better than to screw with a good thing. I think that, in some ways, the success of shows like Lost, which you hear about at places like Dragon*Con and is a fave of a lot of non-mainstream people, show a change in the tastes of viewers. Given the fact that Rolling Stone and TV Guide call it "one of the best shows on television" suggests that NBC, who already produces the show, knows it's a good thing and to not touch it.

I believe, ultimately, it'll fill a place in the hearts of West Wing viewers.

Daggitt type stuff?

Ronald Moore is amazing. I agree with you that this is perhaps the best writing a sci fi television show has had up to now. I did like his spin on DS9 and lord only hopes that if they ever do re-vamp Star Trek and bring it back on the air again that he will be part of it ( ... )

Advancing the plot quickly and trying to get back on pace are noble goals. Let's face it, though, that there was a LOT of plot that was simply thrown out and it simply wasn't appropriate. For example...how did Baltar ruin the economy? How did Tyrol end up a unionist and agitator? Where did Adama's moustache come from? Yeah. The last one was a joke. Seriously, it seems like Baltar somehow became an incompetent tyrant who, for reasons I can't fathom, evaded assassination. That's relevant. The fleet was a stressed but functional society. Understanding their societal breakdown was important. If Moore felt that all of that was so important, he didn't have to have the ballot stuffing conspiracy plot arc. That time could have been better spent with Baltar running everything into the ground ( ... )

I'd even feel better about it if Moore would put something in his blog explaining his reasoning. He hasn't yet.

Give the brother a chance to work it out. I'm sure he will visit and touch upon what has come to pass. Remember that BSG has a tendancy to re-visit the past in both flashbacks and in Tarantino style.

The one moment I am looking forward to is when they finally reveal that Baltar betrayed humanity. Oooooh I hope this happens soon!

I think the jump will give us a lot of nifty flashbacks over the next year or years, so keep the faith. I also thought that Space Above & Beyond was best as it progressed, and I like being open to new ideas and interpretations. As long as the story keeps moving (and I have no doubts) I could stand a four of five episode arc on New Caprica. Note that this may also have something to do with streamlining the "fleet" as well as the story.

I am geeking with childish glee.
