Gretchen raised her eyebrows. "You were expecting...who?" she asked. She walked past Stephen and entered his flat without waiting for him to invite her in. He would have invited her in, she knew that. She looked around. It was nice if not on the smallish side.

She noticed he had a bag packed. Her brother was voluntarily going somewhere? It had to be work-related. "Work trip?" she asked.

Gretchen breezed in. Aggressive as usual. "Come in," he mumbled as he closed the door. She smiled at him and asked about his packed bag. "Er...no."

He put the folded towel in the bag and zipped it up. "Did you...why are you here?" he asked.

Gretchen's mouthed dropped open before she could stop it. He was going somewhere, and it wasn't work-related. How interesting.

"Where are you going, then?" she asked. Then, she smirked. "Romantic escapade?"

Gretchen didn't let Stephen's brusque question bother her. He had never been very good with words, and she could tell he wasn't being rude. He was honestly curious.

"I stopped by to see Dad and Mum," she explained before dropping down onto his couch. She straightened the books on his coffee table while she talked. "They might have mentioned a dinner with you." Gretchen looked up at him. "Mum cried, Stephen. Don't you think you can cut her some slack. Dad said you were a bit shirty, and he's...well, he's not pleased. They both want to see you again. Perhaps you could apologize."

Stephen felt his cheeks get hot. "No," he answered. He definitely was not going on a romantic escapade. Just the thought of it made him want to put his head between his knees. Stephen knew that his name and the word 'romance' were unlikely to be spoken in the same sentence.

When Gretchen started in on him about his parents, he didn't even bother silencing the groan that came out. "Gretch," he said when she was finally finished, "they can't expect me to forget what happened. Don't you remember? Let's not pretend it was a happy time, and it was completely avoidable. None of us had to suffer like we did."

Stephen was tired of defending his opinion. Why was everyone so willing to forgive and forget? Didn't they realize that sometimes it took time to forget?
