Teddy was exhausted. He didn't even wake up when Andy changed him into his pajamas. It had been a busy day, though. They'd run errands and spent time in the back garden when it wasn't raining. When it was, he had been active indoors in a way that made her envy his energy. He had no idea what this weekend signified, though, and she was glad of it. He could happily play with his blocks and attempt to walk without thinking about the parents he'd never know or realizing what was important about these two dates.
Roger's visit had helped tire Teddy out, too. He took to Roger well, and, tonight, he had developed the habit of showing off his toys to Roger. She found it amusing because Dora had been similar at that age, even before they were old enough to realize what they were doing. By the time they'd finished a leisurely dinner, Teddy had been asleep. Now, he was tucked into bed and would hopefully sleep for several hours.
She dimmed the lantern in his room before she headed back downstairs to where Roger was waiting. They'd had good casual conversation during dinner, but she was generally aware of Teddy's presence even if he was too young to understand what they were saying so she didn't talk about some subjects with him around. Roger had agreed to stay for pudding, though, so she hoped they had a good talk about whatever might distract her from what had been happening a year ago.
"Teddy's all settled now," she told Roger. "Would you like a glass of wine? I've also got a chocolate cake that I got from the bakery earlier, if you're hungry."
