He wasn't panicking. He wasn't. Reed Burgess Bradley did not panic. He certainly didn't panic over exams. He never panicked over examinations. He didn't panic over his OWLs and he wasn't going to start panicking over his NEWTs. He wasn't. There was no bloody way he'd fail. He was prepared. He was organized. He was a lean, mean, learning machine. There was nothing at all to panic about.
So why the bloody hell was he panicking?
Maybe he could blame it on the Dementors. Those bastards had definitely messed with his mind last year. RB thought he'd gotten it all out of his system, but apparently not. There wasn't much else that could account for this sense of impending doom he felt this morning. Well, maybe one of his odd prescient dreams but Reed had slept soundly last night. Maybe that was the problem. He slept a little too well. Maybe that was what had him so edgy. Whatever it was, he needed to shake it so he could concentrate properly on his revision.
He'd tried going for a fly to see if it would calm him down. While that had taken his mind off of NEWTs, it had put them firmly on Mandy. Or rather on Mandy being chatted up by that arse Goldstein. Goldstein who had always been telling folks in the common room to 'quiet down' and being all anal about his revision, like talking about revising and study groups was just as important as doing it. Nevermind that Reed's best mate, Basil was like that sometimes too. It wasn't the same at all because Head Boy Basil was busy chatting up the Head Girl, not RB's own girl. Reed just knew Goldstein was trying to win over Mandy. And Mandy was so sweet and kind and pretty and smart and amazing that Reed knew just about any bloke would try to get her attention. They'd have to be mental not to want Mandy. Thinking about Goldstein chatting up Reed's girl had only given him another thing to panic about. Reed adored Mandy. He knew how lucky he was to have her. He thought about her a lot. He wrote her almost... No, he panicked even more earlier when he realized that he'd been so wrapped in thinking about her and thinking about that girl-snatcher Goldstein that he hadn't written Mandy at all last week. Reed wondered what the bloody hell was wrong with him. Was he trying to drive Mandy into Goldstein's arms? He'd immediately taken his broom up to the tower and gotten his pack to go back outside and write his girl.
His girl. Not Goldstein's.
Reed cast a drying charm to get rid of the little bit of water from the earlier rain on the ledge in the courtyard. It was a warm day and nice for being outside. He propped himself up on the ledge with his back against a column and started his letter. He might not be able to fix his panic over NEWTs, but he could at least try to make things up to Mandy.
