Date: February 1, 1999 Characters: Adrian Pucey, Hestia Jones Location: Flourish & Blotts Status: Private Summary: Adrian chats up Hestia Completion: Complete
Hestia had the day off. It was a pleasant luxury, so she slept in, ate 2 bowls of porridge while reading the Daily Prophet, lay in bed reading a deliciously naughty romance novel for most of the day, and then got dressed at half past two.
She decided to browse through Flourish & Blotts, forcing herself to walk past the romances and over to the section on Potions and Herbology. She picked up a text with ornate gold writing on the front and began flipping through it. She was engrossed in a wildly implausible theory on Wolfsbane when she heard someone talking to her. "This? Not worth the parchment it's printed on," she said with a grimace. "Please tell me you didn't write it."
Adrian almost laughed out loud. It had sounded a bit like he was fishing for a compliment. "I apologize. That did sound like I was hoping for a compliment, did it not?"
He held out his hand. "Adrian Pucey. Not..." he peered the books in the display "Grunella Greenfield. I would certainly pick a better sounding nom de plume, had I indeed written the book. And the writing would be silver, of course."
"A little," Hestia said with a smile, before shaking the man's hand. "Hestia Jones. And that's not a terribly attractive nom de plume, I agree. I'd go with something more exotic, like Brunhilda van Hoffenstaal."
She quirked an eyebrow when he mentioned silver writing. "Slytherin, were you? Or do you just prefer the colour? I'm not terribly fond of gold on books myself, but that's more aesthetic preference rather than loyalty to an old house."
"Well, Brunhilda, you've figured me out. Not that there's anything wrong with gold, of course, but the Slytherin in me is partial to silver."
He waved a hand dismissively at the rack of books. "This? Has Gryffindor written all over it." He thought for a moment. "I didn't just inadvertently offend you, did I?"
