It was a lovely day out. Even with the cold and the high wind, it was just pleasant for walking. Hermione had suggested a longer route to take so that she and Harry could enjoy the weather. When they arrived at home, however, her cheeks felt numb and the fireplace had been a welcome sight. Instead of going upstairs to start revising, she went to the bathroom and then went downstairs to the kitchen to wait for Harry.
She still needed to buy Ron's Christmas gift. It was funny, really, that she had expected him and Harry to be easier gifts, since they were her best friends. Instead, they'd proven to be the most difficult. If not for a random conversation on Friday afternoon, she would still be trying to figure out what to get for Harry. Fortunately, she now had an idea, though she wouldn't be able to get it until next weekend. The idea of getting his gift on Christmas Eve was enough to cause anxiety, since she hated waiting until the last minute. It would be worth it, she had decided, because she had loved the gift idea as soon as she'd had it, and she felt like it was the right choice.
That left Ron. She had some ideas, but none of them struck her as the right idea, so she kept trying. Hopefully she'd find something today. Ron was important to her, the second most important person in her life now, and she just wanted something that would make him happy. He and Harry both deserved that this year, and every year. She was glad that she wouldn't have to look on her own, at least. Harry had agreed to go with her to Diagon Alley while she browsed and waited for inspiration to strike.
When she arrived in the kitchen, Harry was already there. She took a moment to just look at him since he didn't seem to have noticed her yet. When she realized that she'd been staring too long, she bit her lip and shook her head at herself. She entered the kitchen and smiled. "Hey," she said. "I hope you've not been waiting long."
