Work was actually going quickly this week. The cases they were assigned proved to be more involving than simply filing paperwork, which was interesting. Hermione was enjoying the work, but the case she had to work on today had been more difficult. A man who had been a Snatcher, accused of rape and torture and murder. It had brought back unpleasant memories, to say the least. She'd dealt with it, though, and had focused on reviewing the file she had been given.

After work, she had needed air, so she walked to Diagon Alley instead of going home. She didn't bother with a warming charm because the cold made her feel better. However, she had to pull her coat more tightly around her as she walked. She hadn't gone too far when she spotted a familiar figure ahead of her.

"Good afternoon, George," she said, walking up to him.

George flinched when his name was called, but his face broke into a smile when he recognized the speaker. "Well, if it isn't my sparring partner. How's it going, Hermione?

"It's going well. How are you?" she asked as she reached him. He was smiling, which was a positive sign, but she couldn't tell if it was actually sincere or forced.

"Just taking a break," he said, scratching his head vigorously. "I've hit a wall on a project and I think I need to step back a bit."

He looked again at the book and frowned. "I was just going to ask if buying a book as a Christmas gift for your best girl friend would be considered impersonal, but I suppose you're the wrong girl to ask."

"That's something we have in common. I'm not particularly fond of being told what to do," she admitted. "Rules are fine, but I prefer to do things my way when possible. However, I have to adapt that attitude or I'll never get a job."

"How are things going with the shop? I know you've mentioned that it's busier right now, but I mean overall. Is everything okay profit-wise?" She bit her lip. "If that's too nosy, just tell me to mind my own business. I won't be offended."

The chocolate was good, nice and warm. George asked about Harry, and she considered it. "He's doing well. Busy with classes and work, like the rest of us, but he's working on some Quidditch thing with Angelina and Oliver and making time for renewing friendships. I think he's happy, if only for the war to be over and to have a chance to live without all the pressure."

"How are things at the shop? Any new products you're thinking up?"

"Yeah, that'll take some getting used to," he said.

"Everything is fine." he said. "There was a big rush when we first started, then it leveled off a bit once the kids were at school. The new product are bringing more people in, though, especially on the mail order front. It seems some people are too embarrassed to buy dirty charms in person," he said, leaning forward and winking.

He nodded at her comments about Harry, and he made a mental note to drop in on him himself one of these days. "Yeah, lots of things in the works. More of the gag spirits, and a few more things to add to the adult line. Potions and lotions and the like. Possibly a toy or two, if Mum doesn't kill me first."

"With the mail order, do you have some way to confirm age? I mean, I assume you have some sort of system in place for people in the shop, but it can be more difficult for legality purposes with something like mail order, I'd think," she said thoughtfully ( ... )

"Thought of all of that," he said. "And there's an age line in the shop."

Yeah," he said. "I reckon once the line starts expanding, it'll be a back room, and the age line on the door. But for now, well, the packaging on the charms is innocent enough, and they can't even reach them to look them over. And the booze is harmless, too, no pictures of naked people or anything, yeah?"

"Still working on the jokes, but this is to keep my original customer base from deciding they are too grown up for our shop. And it gives the ickle ones something to look forward to. Part of the appeal was always the forbidden. Old Filch did us a huge favour by banning everything."
