It had been a busy day. Because it was Saturday, Ron had had a bit of a lie-in, then gone to the shop around 10 a.m. and worked until 4 o'clock. When he got back to Grimmauld Place, Luna was visiting with Harry and Hermione. Ron had known she was coming to visit, of course, and was pleased to see her; he always enjoyed any opportunity to talk with Luna, who'd seemed completely entranced by the redecorating done to the big old house.

When Luna left, Ron excused himself from his two best friends so he could shower and change for his date with Parvati. I have a date with Parvati, he thought, shaking his head at the weirdness of it all. He'd known her since they were both 11, and she had shared a dorm room with Hermione for six years and Lavender for seven. Not to mention the fact that he had gone out with Lavender for several months while harbouring feelings for Hermione the whole time and for another year afterward. Then there was the whole business of his rather messy breakup with Lavender, then sharing a tent with Hermione (and ( ... )

Parvati jumped up as the floo came to life, finding heat her hands were shaking more than ever. She tried to sound calmer than she felt as she greeted hims, siddenly questioning her usual 'Hey, Ron.'

"Hi," she said brightly, handing him Julius' overly ornate Floo brush. She wasn't sure i f he was going to want to stay in Hogsmeade or go back directly into the Floo.

"You made it," she said lamely.

Ron saw Parvati as she approached him, carrying a Floo brush so he could clean himself off. "Hi, Parvati," he said, taking the brush and cleaning up a bit. "Yeah, looks like I got here all in one piece. Least I didn't get lost in the Floo Network." You could end up halfway across Britain if you didn't say your destination clearly enough.

He stepped further into the shop, which appeared to be abandoned save for himself, Parvati and Julius, her boss. "He's not going to fuss over me this time, is he?" Ron asked in a low, nervous voice.

Parvati laughed. "No, I think he slipped out the back. Actually I asked him to slip out the back. Either he was going to attempt the glowering father role or he was going to flirt with you. It was a good bet you wouldn't enjoy either one."

She twisted her fingers a bit and decided to go for her coat. "So, are we walking or Apparating or using the Floo? I hope it doesn't rain."

"George'd be glad to know that, about the Daydream Charms," Ron said. Not that it was the sort of testimonial they could use in their catalogue - Hogwarts students who used Weasley's Patented Daydream Charms retained their sanity despite Death Eaters' attempts to drive them round the twist. Well, that would be too long for the catalogue anyway.

As they entered the restaurant, he was met by some really delicious smells. The place was mostly full, and Ron and Parvati edged their way through the tables until they found a place to sit. He looked over his menu, noting a long list of things he'd like to try, but he was fine with Parvati's suggestion. "Yeah, that would be good. 's not exactly something we got to eat at Hogwarts. How about we have them put some sausage and cheese and mushrooms on it?"

"Yeah, those things were like gold, especially when we were all stuck in that room for the last few weeks. Not a lot of privacy, and though it was like an adventure at first, sometimes people would lose patience. Plus the snoring was a problem ( ... )

Ron ordered a pizza for the two of them, and when Parvati ordered a glass of wine, he chose a mug of Muggle beer for himself. As they waited for their drinks, Parvati started talking in a way that surprised him; she basically admitted that it might be hard for them to find a lot to talk about that wasn't an uncomfortable topic.

Then she asked about "the dragon story". "Oh, you mean when my brother Charlie wrangled some of the dragons for the Tri-Wizard tournament?"

Parvati looked at him blankly - and Ron realised she meant something entirely different. "Ohhhh... well," he began, trying to figure out how to tell that particular story without too much detail. "We -- me, Harry and Hermione - we had to find something that was hidden in a vault deep under Gringotts. There was only one way we could get it out of Gringotts without the goblins stopping us. There was this blind dragon living under Gringotts, and we sort of used it to, er, break out of the bank."

When she asked about the dragon, Ron brought up his brother, who she'd momentarily forgot about. Well, she'd only seen him twice, and that last time had been a bit embarrassing.

"Funny," she said, shaking her head in wonder. "That's sort of how the story went when we got wind of it, but it seemed too fantastic to be real. So how far did you go? How did you manage to get off it?"

"Well, be glad about the brussels sprouts, because they're really nasty," he said. "Sort of like awful tiny cabbages, like someone found the worst possible cabbage and used a shrinking charm on it, and then cooked them whole." He shuddered. "Disgusting. But I love carrots. When I was a kid I thought maybe my hair was so ginger because I ate a lot of carrots, but Mum told me no, it was just because she and Dad have red hair. Took me awhile to figure out why that would matter ( ... )

Parvati kept her face quite serious as she replied, though she had trouble stifling a giggle. "Thanks for telling me; I'll be sure to avoid them at all costs." She liked the story about his hair quite a bit. When she'd first seen all the redheads at the Gryffindor table, it had added to the sense of foreignness that she'd felt as she looked around her that first night; she was feeling the loss of her sister so acutely. Thank goodness for Lavender ( ... )

"What changed with us and Hermione?" Ron couldn't forget that day, and he actually felt a bit embarrassed about it now. "Well, see, it was Halloween in first year, and that troll had got into the castle, y'know? And Harry wanted to look for her, because she wasn't around then. So we found her in one of the girls' loos, and... the troll was in there too! And me and Harry fought him off and managed to knock him out. Then McGonagall and Snape showed up and Hermione told them she had tried to take on the troll by herself. Except actually, she'd been in there crying because I'd called her some rude names." He frowned, remembering what a prat he'd been. He'd grown up a lot since then, though he knew he could still be a prat fairly often.

When Parvati recounted reaction to being separated from Padam, Ron frowned, then smiled. "Seems like that worked out in the end, then."

She had no trouble believing that, and though she knew he'd grown up a lot since then, she was pleased to know that he felt guilt for hurting a girl's feelings. He had certainly hurt Lavender, whether he meant to or not. "It's odd," she said, "how so many of the fantastical stories turned out to be true.

"It did, I think, though maybe it taught me not to be too attached to people Maybe that's a good thing?" she said, and as the band fbished up their songs, she wondered if she'd lost the chance to dance with him again.
