Neville was coming over for dinner tonight. Hermione had invited him to dine with her and Ron and Harry, but also to take a look at the conversatory; they were thinking of hiring him to fix it up and fill it with beautiful plants and flowers. If anyone could do that, Ron thought, it would be Neville, who'd always had a real way with plants and a gift for Herbology. Ron knew Neville was apprenticing with Professor Sprout in addition to taking NEWT prep courses. It seemed Neville was in class or working at least 12 hours a day, so Ron was glad his old friend was managing to find time to visit them.
Harry and Hermione were in the sitting room, waiting for Neville to arrive. Ron went down to the kitchen to check on dinner. Kreacher was cooking something excellent that smelled like a pot roast. When Ron tried to look under the lid, the old house elf muttered under his breath.
"Master's Weasley must not touch the pot roast!" he snarled. "Kreacher has worked hard to make a nice dinner for Master's friend. Master's Weasley is not to be ruining it."
"Easy, Kreacher," Ron said, backing away from the cooker. "I'll just go back to the sitting room now."
He left the kitchen and returned to the sitting room. "So, any sign of Nev yet? Looks like dinner'll be ready pretty soon once he gets here."
