"For what it's worth, Daphne, you know I'm here whenever you need me," she said as she stuffed her trunk.
Daphne was sitting on Sasha's bed, her feet up underneath her, one arm holding her up. "I know, Sash, I'm here for you, too."
"I know."
Sasha continued to pack, putting in things she thought she might need on her trip.
"This is just something I have to do."
"I know."
Daphne looked down at her hands. She couldn't help feel guilty for moving out on Sasha, but her brother had needed her and, someday, Sasha would understand. When it was long enough over that Daphne could explain she'd had to take in her fugitive brother, then Sasha would understand why she couldn't put her best friend in danger. Especially when Sasha herself was dealing with her parents leaving, separating, taking care of her brother, trying to finish her NEWTs, as well.
However, Sasha hadn't been around much lately and Daphne knew there was something going on before she even had the chance to explain. It was just one of those things that best friends knew. And it was obvious to Daphne that Sasha was too shaken to handle school at the moment.
Then when she had owled Sasha and asked her what was up, Sasha told her to come and visit her because she was going to have to go away for a while. Daphne knew at once what Sasha was planning and, though she couldn't stop her from dropping her NEWT courses and boarding up her house in London, Daphne had attempted to talk some sense into her.
"Don't do anything stupid," she had said. "Don't let your temper get the best of you. She's still your mother, even if she left. You might want to hear what she has to say before you go hexing her."
Sasha hadn't dignified that with a response.
"Just be careful," Daphne had said. "I want you coming back in one piece. And so does Andrei... does he even know where you're going?"
"No."
And now they were in Sasha's room and she was finishing the last of her packing.
Daphne's eyes burned, but she wasn't crying. She knew Sasha had to strike out on her own and do whatever it was she was doing. Everyone dealt with war differently and, while Sasha's mother had obviously been a coward, Sasha was not. She had started the hunt for her mother directly after her disappearance and now that she had a lead on where she was, Sasha had to find out why she left.
It was something Daphne could understand. After all, her parents had gone into hiding, too. But they'd come back. Not that she was talking to them that often even now they were back. The rift between Julian and her parents had Daphne's chest in knots. She didn't like to think about it.
When Sasha was finished packing the trunk, Daphne helped her down the stairs with a quick locomotion spell.
There was nothing left to say, so the two stood looking at each other, embraced, and parted ways.
