Daphne returned home around eight o'clock in the evening and headed straight for the Capper kitchen. Her stomach was rumbling something fierce and Daphne just realized that she hadn't eaten anything since breakfast (hot cereal at seven that morning). This schedule was already starting to wear on her after a few days. Daphne knew that she'd have to work hard to keep it up.

Rummaging around in the ice box, Daphne found a large plate of pasta, sausage, and sauce and her stomach did a turn and moaned. She cast a quick charm to heat it and sat down at the table with a fork.

Just then Daphne heard a noise at the door. "Mhhph, hi!" she said with mouth full of pasta.

"Daph, how goes it? Feel like I haven't seen you in days."

"Busy," she said, quite honestly, though still a bit more solemn than usual.

It was time to tell Sasha something she'd been mulling over for two days now. Even food would have to wait for this conversation to be over.

"Sasha, I think I need to get a place of my own."

She waited.

Sasha sat across the table and looked Daphne straight in the face. "Daphne, what's wrong?"

The thing about having a best friend for years is that they know when something's off and they know what to say to bring it out of you. Daphne waffled, then took a drink of water.

Resolved again, Daphne looked her friend in the face. "Nothing, I'm just really busy and, you know, it'd be nice to be closer to the rest of our classmates. Almost everyone's living in Hogsmeade now. Besides, I wouldn't want to overstay my welcome. And I know Andrei needs you now more than ever."

Now Daphne was making excuses and Sasha knew it. This was going to be hard. How would Daphne get around telling Sasha that her brother was alive? And needed her? It was a big secret, but years of practice hadn't been wasted in the department of withholding information from others.

"-not a burden at all, Daph, you know that. You're welcome as long as you want to stay," continued Sasha. Daphne hadn't heard the beginning as she was thinking of what to say next. "And Andrei and I barely speak at the moment, you know that. I'm too busy to play mom, but he's figuring it out. Besides, he's living at Hogwarts during the year, anyway."

What could she say to that?

"Sasha, I think I just need some space to figure things out. It doesn't mean I won't visit, of course, or that you can't stay with me whenever you want."

Sasha frowned. Daphne's stomach turned again, but this time it wasn't out of hunger, but guilt.

Sasha huffed off up the stairs to her room, leaving Daphne alone with her pasta getting cold.
