Ginny could tell by the tone of her mum's voice that she was about to be reprimanded for something. The tone of someone who's trying very hard to be pleasant, is how she'd describe it, were she to try.
What was it this time? Landry not put away? Dishes in the sink? Ginny was going to have to brush up on her household charms now that she was 17. And now that she didn't have house elves to do them for her.
She wandered out onto the landing and relectantly made her way down the stairs to the kitchen, where her mother was waiting, hand on rail. "Yeah, Mum. What's going on?"
"Let's go sit in the living room, Ginny." She said, leading her in and then sitting down in her favourite armchair.
She took a deep breath, reminding herself that no matter how bad it got, Ginny's future was at stake.
"Ginny, I noticed that you haven't gone to purchase your school supplies, even though the train leaves tomorrow. I know you talked to your father about other options. And as you know, those are not available. We thought we'd give you some time to think it over, but that time is up."
She paused, and then decided to let Ginny have a moment for that to sink in.
The living room? Oh-oh. Ginny got the feeling this was more serious than she had suspected. She perched herself tentatively on the edge of the settee. Watching her mother's metered breathing, Ginny was gobsmacked at the words that came out of her mouth. What fresh hell was this?
Uncharacteristically speechless for a moment, she quickly gathered her wits and said, "Er...yeah. I didn't go school shopping because I'm not going to school. Pretty simple, really."
"I didn't discuss other options with Dad. This is already decided. I'm not going back to the castle, Mum. That's just not possible."
Molly pursed her lips, feeling her anger begin to bubble.
"Young lady, I have put up with a lot from you the past few months. Your father and I have let things slide because of the war and losing your brother. But clearly, we have been too indulgent.
"You will be returning to Hogwarts tomorrow. That is what is going to happen."
