Lucius breathed in deeply the scent in the room. It had been a long day of sorting through musty books and ancient tomes in Hogwarts library, and for hours after he'd left, he could still smell the mold. Dinner was bland(as usual), didn't have adequate dessert (as usual), and he was only allowed one glass of wine with no after-dinner port (as usual).
However, he had a completely different kind of after-dinner treat tonight. Instead of retiring to his study, and Narcissa to the music room, he brought her into the parlour, lit a warm fire, and ushered her to sit with him on the davenport so he might read with her curled up in his lap. For so many years this had been one of those precious intimate experiences they would share together. Even back in school, he loved having her fall asleep resting on his shoulder, laying with her head in his lap, or curled up with him on the sofa in the common room. No matter how old they were, no matter what happened to them, they would still have this.
And while he was in Azkaban, it was the one thing he missed most.
He could always imagine holding her, making love to her, kissing her. This, however, was so subtle, it was almost like a web of veela-spun honey atop a choux a la creme - so fragile that it could melt away at any moment.
After several minutes, Lucius became tired of pretending to read his book. He set it down and looked down at his wife's face. "You always amaze me, you know that? So beautiful, even after all this time. It's as if you haven't aged at all," he whispered, petting back her hair.
