"Sasha!" Daphne grinned when her friend entered the shop. "And you brought lunch!"

She would have hugged her on the spot, but that was completely unprofessional and Daphne wouldn't risk losing the only job she had for a hug, so she grinned widely and asked what was up with her friend.

"Thanks!" Bringing her lunch was completely warranted, but the silly manner in which she'd announced herself was a little out-of-character for Sasha. "What's with you today?"

"Haze of inaction regarding what?" Sasha asked, genuinely interested. "You've never struck me as the type to hold back."

"I'm not," replied Ernie with a frown, "which is why it's worrying. Just- I mean, I've been avoiding people I should be talking to, more than just conversationally, I mean, I should be sitting down and having a bloody heart-to-heart, once-in-a-lifetime talk with them, and of course it'll hurt but at least I might feel better afterwards.

And there's a bunch of other things, like how I should have sorted out the whole Zacharias thing months ago instead of two weeks ago, should have bossed him into doing the right thing like Susan did, and oh, other stuff."

She hadn't expected that kind of confession. She wasn't really sure what a lot of his speech was about, like the thing with Zacharias. But the basic emotion behind his words was one she knew all too well. Grief.

Sasha knew that she'd been avoiding just just a 'bloody heart-to-heart, once-in-a-lifetime talk' with her brother for months now. Maybe she could use some Wit Sharpening Potion too. But, there was always the risk you wouldn't feel better afterwards.

"I think," she paused for a moment, "I think we're all in unchartered territory, aren't we? You shouldn't beat yourself up over anything. Really."

"I'm not," said Ernie seriously. "I'm just...sitting there, thinking rubbish I don't even really remember afterwards."

Daphne came back with the ground scarab beetle and the ginger root in hand.

"if I may interrupt," she said, butting into the conversation, though trying to be polite. "Your supplies... though, I'm sorry to say that we're out of armadillo bile until tomorrow. Our delivery comes in early tomorrow morning. Shall I set some aside for you?"

Ah, a welcome respite. Ernie was beginning to think that if he spoke with Sasha a minute longer someone was bound to end up crying.

"Tomorrow morning? Hmm, sure. I guess I could come in tomorrow. Do you need me to put down a deposit or anything? And how much do I owe you for the other ingredients?"

"8 sickles for the supplies today. You can pay for the bile tomorrow when you pick it up. I'll just write it down so they'll set some aside. How much do you need?"

Daphne was engaged in conversation with Ernie, but she was looking at Sasha and trying to gage what was going on in her best friend's head. Something was up... she looked as if she were on the verge of tears.

She looked over at Sasha with an encouraging sort of half-smile.

"Will that be all or was there anything else you needed?" she asked, turning back to Ernie.

Ernie counted out the money. "Um...four ounces should do it, thanks. It's all I need today." He picked up his package and turned to go.

"So...I'll see you tomorrow," he added, looking at Daphne. He turned to Sasha. "And I'll see you...sometime...well, at work on Monday. Yes." He gave her a quick pat on the shoulder and left.

"Okay. I'm not working in the morning, but there shouldn't be a problem picking up your order," she said.

After Ernie left, Daphne turned back to Sasha, still the only other person in the shop, and shot her a look.

"Care to explain, pal?" she asked, half-teasing, half-comforting.
