Daphne Greengrass, a lithe brunette with a fresh, but rather pinched face, made her way through the streets of Diagon Alley until she came to the head of the street, where the large, foreboding building stood looking anything but welcoming. Its looming dark figure wasn't unwelcome to Daphne, however. It was a sight for sore eyes and Daphne was comforted by the dingy pub and sat herself at the bar, ordering up a large firewhiskey and a club sandwich and chips and a pint.
Daphne sighed and picked up a picked-over issue of the Daily Prophet. She read as she waited for her drinks and food and took a few deep breaths. It had been over a week and a half since she'd heard word from her family. After she'd gone to the house and found nothing, she'd received an owl about a week later, not their family owl, but a strange bird she'd never seen before, bearing a note. It hadn't explained much more than Daphne had already suspected. Her family were staying in Prague for the time being, waiting to see what was to happen in Britain and relying on Daphne to relay news. She wasn't particularly comfortable with the situation, but there wasn't anything she could do about it. She couldn't refuse her family and she couldn't leave her friends, either. Their financial situation wasn't as dire as some she had heard of, but Daphne also knew that she was going to have to pay for everything for herself now and couldn't expect to rely on her parents' income to support her, especially since they hadn't a large amount in savings like some of her classmates' families, and they certainly hadn't put any away in Muggle banks.
Sighing audibly, Daphne looked up from the paper just in time to see the barkeep deliver her firewhiskey and her beer. After she downed the shot, she sipped on the beer, her throat burning just a little, then cooled by the hoppy beverage. Daphne put her glass down, realizing only when she looked at it that she had drained half the pint in one gulp. She ordered a mineral water to follow the beer. She needed it or she'd be nauseas after the food.
Daphne thought over her situation and tried to decide how to talk to Sasha about her family situation. She hadn't filled her in on the latest owl from Prague, but then again she and Sasha hadn't had much time for chatting since Sasha had taken on her own job and Daphne had joined the staff at Slug & Jiggers. She missed her best friend. She missed days when they discussed music and history and when they could just be teenagers. Life was much more complicated now. And Daphne was more than happy to do her share of the work, but it didn't mean she didn't miss what it was like before. At any rate, this new freedom was better than what life had been like in the castle for the last year and Daphne was glad to be with the one person she really felt she could trust.
Her food arrived and Daphne downed the second half of her beer before taking a bite. She watched the various vagabonds and hags, gentlemen and travelers come and go as she ate, trying to think, but letting her thoughts wander to and fro over the bar.
