Date: 20 December, 1999 Characters: George Weasley, Ginny Weasley Location: Hogsmeade Status: Private Summary: The siblings take a chilly walk together and find something George needs. Completion: Complete
Ginny was doing a bit of shopping. She was nearly finished. It wasn't as though she had a lot of money to spend this holiday, but still, she'd been able to get one or two small things for everyone.
She walked out of the book shop and saw George heading her way. She smiled and lifted her hand and waved. "Hey, handsome!" She hurried over to him and pulled him into a quick hug. "It's freezing out here and you look like you're going for a stroll."
George grinned as Ginny approached, catching her into a tight hug and kissing her cheek. "It is, and I am. Inside was making me crazy, and that's no place I want to be again." He gave his jacket's zipper another tug, then shoved his hands back into his pockets.
"Where are you off to? Fancy a walk? I'll spring for chocolate after..." What girl couldn't be tempted by hot chocolate?
Ginny shook her head and cast a Warming Charm. "There," she said. "Now I fancy a walk. Otherwise, it's too bloody cold out here. But at least it isn't raining or snowing." She moved her shopping bag to her outside hand so it wasn't bumping into their legs as they walked.
"Was probably going to head home, but I'll stay out with you for a while. Especially if you're buying chocolate or hot cocoa later," she said and smiled at him. "Are we walking anywhere in particular or just stretching our legs and freezing our bums?"
"Freezing our bums," George said with a chuckle. "Avoiding being inside. It's... stifling, lately." He shrugged one shoulder, then glanced over at her.
"Haven't seen much of you since I've been home. Sorry about that... Things were..." He shrugged again. "Rough, I guess. But I missed you.
George nodded as she talked about helplessness. Hopelessness. She had the feeling exactly right.
"I just... I'm not used to not having a reason. There was always Fred, and work, then Lee..." He inhaled deeply, then let it out slowly, then looked over at Ginny. "I've got to find something real to do, Gin. I'm going to go crazy if I don't. I can't do that again..."
He took a step up onto the walkway again, shading the glass with both hands and looking through the window.
"By real, do you mean open a new shop or...something new? Different?" she asked. George was good at what he did--making, creating, finding laughter in others. But if he wanted a new profession, she'd support him.
She walked up and peered inside the window. "Bit of a mess."
"I don't know," he said after a moment. "Something more than making my bed and doing my own laundry. Getting things started with the museum helped, but..."
He shrugged, turning to lean against the window, looking up under the eaves. "It's coming along almost by itself. It's got its own Gringotts vault, and a curator; Dean's going to do some artwork for me... It doesn't need me." He scowled at a bit of hanging wood under the edge of the roof. That would need replacing...
He glanced at the interior through the dusty glass again, then shrugged. "Cleaned up messes before," he said thoughtfully, crossing to the other side of the front and wiping a spot clear there. "It's not as big as 93, but..."
He wouldn't really need that much space, starting off fresh, and this would be so close to the school...
Ginny agreed that George needed something else to fill up his time. Doing laundry and other household chores all day long was enough to make anyone feel restless or nutters. She knew the museum was coming along; she'd even stopped by a few times to see the work being done.
George wiped the glass until there was a clean circle to see through. She listened to him talk and nodded. "Got good bones though, yeah?" She looked in again. "Nice light during the day. Open feel." She stepped back and looked at George. "It's just sitting here empty now. You could do it. I could help you clean up." Then, she wondered if she was adding pressure to him. "But, if you think it's a shite idea, that's okay, too. You don't have to do this."

Owl orders would be so much faster...
And he'd catch students on Hogsmeade weekends...
