sadly labor is cheap in Asia. Although that's great for business, humans become dispensable resource, and safety takes the backseat! I see that here with construction industry! ughh..ugly side of human greed...

Here in Naples, I have a close friend getting her PhD at the University of Naples, working with all Italians. She is having a lot of the same problems in the way of science. They are following standards to keep cell cultures free of germs. She said they just quit smoking in the lab a few weeks ago but they still eat and drink and have a huge hole to the outside world and never wear gloves. It drives her freakin nuts and me too listening to it. Do they not know the importance?

I am absolutely amazed by how well Italians are generally adhering to the smoking ban.

I hear that!

Why couldn't they have chosen this ban during the summer and not during the coldest winter in 200 years?!

That's a good thing, even more likelyhood of people quitting for good.

I still keep all my LOTO stuff (and other safety stuff in my car), ready to LOTO at a moment's notice . .

Nice to hear from a fellow field engineer. I saw your post on expatriates.

sorry for me, stories like this are way too common in my work, too.

Recent favorite: A technician used safety body climbing harness to lift heavy material, instead of bothering to find lifting slings.
