Title: A Moment Like This
Rating: G
Pairing(s): Chlark
Spoilers: None; unless you have not seen all of season 4 (up through Spirit).
Disclaimer: If I owned Smallville, Clark and Chloe would have gotten together a freaking long time ago. So, yeah, whatever.
Summary: An Alternate Universe take on Spirit. Prom night ends up being the most memorable night of Chloe Sullivan's life... for more than one reason.

Chloe sat in a corner of the room at a table, Lois by her side.

She reached into Lois's purse and took out the little mirror that was in it.

As she checked her makeup and made sure all the runny mascara was off her cheeks, the crown on her head caught her attention.

Chloe Sullivan, Prom Queen.

It was something she'd never had imagined would happen, but yet it was. She'd never had imagined that a crazy wannabe prom queen would take over her body and try to destroy the school, but that had just happened, too.

The principal suddenly announced that the last song of the night was about to be played, and Chloe slipped Lois's mirror back into the purse.

"Does the Prom Queen need a dance partner?" Lois asked. "I can go beat a guy into submission."

Chloe laughed, and shook her head. "No. That's okay, Lois."

The only person she wanted to dance with was in no way interested, and she knew it.

As the final song of the night began to play, sadness swept over her, and her mind fell back to the night of the Spring Formal during freshman year.

*What if I told you it was all meant to be?
Would you believe me, would you agree?*

She'd felt like a princess that night with Clark. Part of her felt that way now, but something was definitely missing.

She was staring down at the floor when a familiar voice spoke to her.

"Chloe?"

She looked up at the sound of Clark's voice.

The way he was looking at her almost unnerved her.

He held out his hand. "May I have this dance?"

She couldn't hide her surprise. "What, me? You wanna dance with me?"

He smiled sweetly at her. "Every prom queen is supposed to have one dance. And I'd be honored to be the one you share it with."

Her heart almost leapt out of her chest at his words, and she glanced over at Lois.

"Go. Do it." Lois muttered under her breath. "Here's your prince. Now go get on the white horse and ride off into the sunset."

Chloe looked back at Clark, biting her lip.

*It's almost that feeling that we've met before
So tell me that you don't think I'm crazy when I tell you that love has come here and now*

She stood, taking his hand and walking around the table.

Lois smiled as she watched Clark lead her little cousin out to the dance floor, and then reached into her purse and dug out the disposable camera she'd found in it earlier.

Chloe felt herself grow nervous as Clark pulled her close, and she thought again of the spring formal. She only hoped, that this time, things didn't end so abruptly.

*A moment like this

Both were silent, just watching each other while they danced.

Mr. and Mrs. Kent watched from a spot near Lois and Chloe's table.

"Well, that's the last thing I expected to see." Jonathan murmured.

Martha smiled. "It was bound to happen eventually, I think." She looked up at her husband, and they shared a secret look before he reached for her hand.

"Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?" Clark suddenly asked, and Chloe's cheeks reddened.

"No... Thank you." she whispered.

*I can't believe it's happening to me
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this*

The two had no idea, but Lois was snapping pictures of the them from a distance.

She glanced up from her photographing frenzy, and saw Lana walking in.

"Oh, no. Oh, no you don't, Miss Heartbreaker." Lois muttered. "You are NOT ruining my little cousin's big night." She walked over and handed the camera to Mrs. Kent. "Could you handle the documentation duties for a bit? I have a situation."

Martha gave her a look, but nodded and took the camera.

Chloe's eyes couldn't seem to leave Clark's face. He looked so handsome in his tux, so wonderful, and she was now so happy that he'd shown up. Lois was right. He was her prince.

She rested her head against his shoulder, and his arms seemed to wind tighter around her.

Her heart was pounding, and she wondered if he could feel it.

*Everything changes, but beauty remains
Something so tender, I can't explain*

Chloe felt like she was in heaven. If this was a dream, she never wanted to wake up. She wanted to stay in Clark's arms forever.

*Well I may be dreaming, but till I awake
Can we make this dream last forever?
And I'll cherish all the love we share*

Lois spotted Lana heading toward Clark and Chloe, and knew exactly what was about to happen. The little brunette was about to cut in, and Lois wasn't going to allow that.

"Hey... poster girl. Stop right there." She caught the shorter girl's arm. "This is Chloe's night. Let her be happy." She gave her a stern look, then dragged her back to the table.

Chloe raised her head to look at Clark. "Thank you."

"For what?" he wondered, staring down at her admiringly.

"For helping to make this one of the most amazing nights of my life." she whispered.

"I feel like Cinderella." Chloe broke into a smile.

Clark grinned. "And why is that?"

"Well, I'm all dressed up, I have a crown on my head, and I'm dancing with a handsome prince." He chuckled at her words, and she let out a tiny giggle before the smile fell from her lips. "But I know that, at midnight, the glamour will fade away, and I'll be left cleaning up after two ugly stepsisters again. A moment like this can't last forever."

His bluish-green gaze met hers. "You're wrong, Chloe."

Her brow furrowed in confusion. "What?"

He shook his head. "It doesn't have to end." He stopped moving, and so did she. "Something happened to me tonight."

Chloe's heart sped up. "W-What happened?" She released a nervous laugh. "Did you hit your head? Do I need to check for bumps?" She reached up and touched the top of his head, ruffling his hair a little bit, and he laughed.

"Chloe... I saw you walk in tonight, and... something inside me... it changed." he whispered.

Her eyes flew wide. "W-What... what do you mean, Clark?" Her hand went over her heart, trying to calm it.

*Could this be the greatest love of all?
I wanna know that you will catch me when I fall...*

"You walked in..." Clark looked nervous as he took a breath. "...And I fell in love."

She stared up at him, obviously in shock. "W-What?"

*So let me tell you this...*

"I love you, Chloe." he murmured, his hand touching her cheek.

A single tear fell from her eye.

*Some people wait a lifetime for a moment...
Like this*

"C-Clark..." She nearly wanted to sob, but it seemed to be stuck in her throat.

He shook his head. "You don't have to say a word."

*Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this*

He leaned toward her, and gently brushed his lips over hers.

*Some people search forever for that one special kiss*

Lana looked shocked, and Lois watched as she stood and stomped out of the room.

Chloe's eyes were still wide when Clark pulled back to look at her.

"Is this really happening?" she wondered, and he nodded.

He took her hand and put it over his heart. "See how it's going crazy?" he asked. "All you."

She laughed through tears.

*Ohhh, I can't believe it's happening to me*

Lois smirked as she watched them. "It's about time that big dummy woke up."

*Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this....*

Mr. and Mrs. Kent smiled at each other knowingly, then looked back at their son and his best friend.

*Ohhh, like this....*

Clark pulled Chloe close again, and Chloe cried happily into his chest as he held her.

*Ohhhh-ohhhh-ohh, I can't believe it's happening to me...*

She raised her head again and smiled. "I think I need to change what I said earlier. This IS the most amazing night of my life."

*Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this...*

He wiped a tear away with his thumb. "It'll be the first of many. I promise."

The music ended, but they dancing. It was to a tune that only they could hear, and as his lips found hers again, she knew this was one fairy tale that was far from over.

*Oooh... Like... This....*
