Hmmm...

After all the nonsense going on over on LJ, I am thinking more and more than I might need to migrate to Dreamwidth. Except that if I'm going to keep a blog, I should probably do it on a less fandom-centric location like Blogger or WordPress... but I don't like the way either of those handle comments.

Sigh.

I’ve looked into a good number of blogging platforms over the years, and used a few myself. It’s possible that I’ve stumbled across an alternative that might suit you better than the ones you’ve listed.

What is it specifically that you don’t like about how Blogger and WordPress handle comments?

A lot of people who like LJ comment functionality have been using IntenseDebate ( http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/intensedebate/ ) or Disqus (http://disqus.com/) as plugins. (I don't use either, I just see them often used and oft recommended.)

I can highly recommend SquareSpace. No, it's not a free blog, but at only $12 or so a month, it's worth putting stability behind your website or blog (and you can try it for free for two weeks). They host it all for me so I'm in one centralized location mapped to my own domain name. I always felt that a professional site means getting off freebies like Blogger, Wordpress or LJ, where you're not in charge of your own site and where the name of the site isn't necessary your name. But maybe that's just me.

As far as comments go, you can use their commenting system, or integrate Disqus comments in, which is what I use.

Agree with the comments above - if comments are the issue, there are plugins. I'd firmly recommend Wordpress over Blogger, especially in terms of customisation, if that's your plan.

Of course, neither has the 'community' thing - but then LJ seems determined to discourage what's left of that. Sigh.

I've been using WordPress (self-hosted) for my main blog, crossposting to LJ, for a couple years now, and the only thing I don't like is there isn't the same sense of community (no "Friends" etc.). I haven't had any issues with comments--and I don't use a plug-in. You can set them to thread just like they do in LJ in the regular settings. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether commenters can ask to be notified to replies to their comment, because as the admin I get notified of all the comments anyway.
