You know, we've heard this before. Several of the Who actors feared being typecast. They were all wrong.
But opting out only days after receiving such tremendous reviews from all quarters? Grr. He might have had the decency to keep us in suspense.

Maybe he wouldn't have feared being typecast if it had been a flop. After all, if he was that afraid of being remembered as The Doctor, then he ruddy well shouldn't have taken the job in the first place!
And typecasting is actually not the handicap so many actors think it is. I remember a remark from Gareth Thomas (who is most well known in fannish circles as playing Blake in Blake's 7) who managed not to get typecast, despite being the eponymous lead in an SF show -- he said that the problem with not being typecast is that you're never the first person that casting directors think of for a role...

I'm annoyed that Eccleston is getting all prima donna on us. How could you possibly be typecast as the Doctor? The Doctor isn't a single character when it comes to looks or personality! I think he's just blowing indie smoke.
