I wrote this as the first participation bonus for the Prompt Request. It is written to the only unwritten prompt, Anonymous' " A story about breeding magical animals." It came in at 1,672 words.

'Bethany was felt and was sounding quite worried'? And there's an errant 'n' which is probably an 'in' just above that.

Mushroom picking is so fraught with peril. :)

Thank you. The errant 'was' has been wrangled and 'in' is now restored and fully functional.

Yes, if you don't know exactly what it is, don't pick it.

and frequently they have very minute differences...

Such as a slight colour shading that develops as they get older.

Or bioluminescence that was only obvious after dark (I don't know what they were but I was told about that one some years after it happened.)

Oh, dear. Well, the magistrate's wife is about to get an exciting and necessary lesson or three ... I wonder what she'll learn?

One could hope that it'll be not to go onto someone else's property without permission, but some people...

Her lesson may involve a gravestone, or a trip to the hospital involving a liver transplant, if she or her friend ate any of the mushrooms. Worse, in either case, if the magistrate is vindictive, grandmother may find herself on the short end of an investigation into the injury done to her or her friend.
