Mother’s favoured purveyor of all sorts of formal robes was an upmarket department store that had outlets in all the major towns in our province. That was not the sort of place. This was really serious clothes shopping for both sexes.

Perhaps: "This was not that sort of place." OR "That was not the sort of place this was."

I love the description of the colors of her robe. Yes, she is far too complex for a simple bi-colored piece!

And it is quite likely the people he was checking for the police would not have expected him to work with the police either, given what we've been told of his past reputation. Good camouflage there!

I am thinking that I meant the sentence to be "That was not this sort of place."
