News and views:

First up, I am not going to be a reluctant New Yorker much longer. Z. got a tenure-track job near DC, so we are going home. We may have to live in Virginia (The horror! The horror! And believe you me, Heart of Darkness references are not much misplaced with respect to certain aspects of Virginia.), but we'll be in the greater ( Read more... )

Well, you know, Virginia is not that bad.... aside for the traffic from hell and the Springfield mixing bowl - which if you haven't visited recently is EVEN BETTER now that it is in the second year of an eight year redesign. *g*

Congrats on coming home to DC!

Congrats to Z.! And yay for going home! There's cool fans in the DC area as well, tho iirc at least the ones on my flist aren't SV fans.

Apparently despite living 3,000 miles away, I still feel compelled to defend my hometown. I grew up in Alexandria, and it wasn't Heart of Darkness-esque - Northeastern VA is a whole different ball of wax than the rest of the state. If you can deal with the weirdness that is the DC area (and I say that fairly fondly), you'll be fine in NE VA (aside from being stuck with the insano state gov't). I'm happy to provide the info I have on particular towns and such if that would be helpful.

Say what you will, as a person born and bred in DC, I think Virginia is a place of the devil. Make the wrong right turn off Constitution Ave or around the Lincoln Memorial, and you're going to Virginia willy-nilly, and you can't get back, suddenly you're in the Pentagon parking lot, and it just goes downhill from there. And y'all are unwilling to pay for the Metro to go to the right places, though to be fair that's less a NE VA problem. I've also never lived anywhere with a strong local Republican party, even though I've lived under Republican governors. On the other hand, there is Potomac Mills for outlet shopping, and the Signature Theater for Sondheim.

Ah, DC - how I miss it! Debbie Duncan from nimbus practises in DC, fyi, and I'll be in town at least once this summer if you're around for drinks or something.

Congrats to Z. on the career achievement and to you on the move.

Proximity to Metro DC sounds divine to me. I love the parks and the fantastic theatre in the area. I'll look forward to your reviews of the new environs, as DC is on my "maybe" list for the next move.

For me DC is home, so I could blather for hours about the beautiful parks by Union Station, dripping with flowers in the spring, dogwoods and forsythia and lots of things I can't name, and most especially the daffodils, rows of cheerful yellow blooms that have always made me think of God smiling. The wonderful clean Metro, Burrito Brothers, "Taxation without Representation" license plates ... I'm so happy!
