I had never heard of the Hankey story. Looking at 19th century and 18th century Western attempts to be what we today might call liberal or progressive pretty much always make you wince, which I always feel like is a good reminder that critiques of privilege in mainstream liberal politics are not, contrary to some opinions, just nitpicking or obsession with liberal purity, etc. - future generations will look back at what we consider "progressive" today and wince too.
