Two US agencies are holding hearings on copyright reform; enough powerful people (ok, companies) think that copyright law needs changing that this might actually happen.  Don't let it happen without fannish voices: the OTW is soliciting stories of how creating transformative works has helped people in day-to-day life, whether that's through ( Read more... )

This is fantastic. I'll write in.
May I share what you wrote about it (with credit, of course)?
Also, I wrote a paper for one of my classes about a few of the reasons copyright law should be changed, for social justice (and puppies, and Christmas), which, at least, changed the minds of some people in the department about it. I'm sure the people handling this have way more knowledge than I, but if some passionate hand waving from social studies could be of any use, I'll gladly share :)

Please do share! As you probably saw in writing your paper, there's definitely a literature about the benefits of fannish creative activity; because anecdotes often work as well as data with policymakers--even though that shouldn't be the case--the focus now is on getting really concrete examples of how the freedom to make noncommercial transformative works has produced concrete benefits.

err well, what can i do as a reader, and past reccer ??
i mean fandom fics are the main reason i am fluent in english, and things fannish related are the other reasons that i learned video editing and all sorts of computer stuff!
and all these things i learned for fandom, i have been able to translate and use for my professional job (not that they would questioning why i know all that stuff, without having the proper certificates ..)

I mean, aside from donating to ao3 or otw what else could a reader do??

Send in your story! That's exactly the kind of thing we want to share, since outsiders may not understand just how vital transformative works can be for creators and audiences.
