The main female character is actually a person, totally respected by the narrative (I’m looking at you, Ready Player One) Oh my god, so much yes. It may be odd, but what bugged me most about how the female characters were handled in that novel was the issue of attractiveness. The protagonist ignored the love interest's fears he might find her unattractive in person - not because he would love her whatever she looked like for the person she was, but rather because he dismissed her claims of being unattractive because she clearly could not be anything but gorgeous when he was so in love with her. And all the while, there was never any doubt that she really would turn out to be physically attractive. No male protagonist could be asked to love the person, not the
