Wow. I loved The Orchid Thief -- read it before Adaptation. For me, it's not about that one guy, although he's central. It's about the entire culture of obsession (orchid-lovers=Trekkies, you can understand my sympathies), the types of peopple who become fans/obsessees, the history of Florida, the history of orchids ... I mean, no wonder they couldn't adapt it into a movie. The idea was ludicrous in the first place.

Gave notice at work today. Staying for about 30 more days. Gonna try to make it down to your neck of the woods afterwards, try to visit The Man (and explain myself), etc. I'll let you know.

Fair enough. For me the focal guy was the kind of fan who makes fandom nasty -- he didn't like to see others succeed; he didn't build community. So I didn't feel the connections I associate with good obsession, and I felt like Orleans (understandably) ended up too much on his side.

I hope we get to see you!
