Is there any way to meet and evaluate these strangers before making a final decision? Because yeah, living with strangers can be awful if they don't turn out to be perfect flatmates. Perhaps, in the interests of a happy summer, if you chose to live with them you could make and enforce a set of apartment ground rules. That way you'd have a measure of safety and assurance even among strangers.
$300 a month for three months comes to $900 more to live there for the summer. It's up to you whether not having to commute to work, psychiatrist, and doctor for three months is worth $900 to you.
Personally, I always choose to appreciate where I live and to make my home my sanctuary at the cost of being close to work/things. However, a 2.5 hour commute is really excessive. Are those round-trip figures, or one-way figures
( ... )
another thing to consider: I, personally, would make every possible effort *not* to move in with a friend (near, lovely; with scary), *especially* if I like them a lot, because I don't think any amount of love could make me not get sick of them eventually, and that would be sad!
Also, I think you could find more options if you looked around a bit more! I know studios in my building go for less than your Campus option, so if you hunted diligently you might find a room that has a nice balance between cheap and near.
A last thought...not only is the commute to/from Santa Cruz long, but it's also fairly dangerous!
Ah. See there are great longer term housing options for less, but for some reason sublets seem to be costing a lot more on a monthly basis. I'm still debating...but good point about the getting sick of people.
Commuting Sucks. Any chance you could carpool with the Galpinator?
Finding a 3-month place should be easier once you get closer to the summer. Don't know if it could be $500 more like 600-800 though. (You'd still be living with strangers though)
I think personally I would not choose to commute, and I think you should also evaluate the gas factor. Also if you have that long a commute you might as well live at home and not pay anything and commute from there. (not that I'm saying this is a good option)
I think Mirrielees is the better option even though it would be living with strangers, especially if you try and get money out of Stanford to bring down the cost of living there. I know Kenzi is getting money from VPUE for the Stanford Summer Theater thing (and also free housing) so it's possible you might be able to talk them into something.
