Bella knew it was stupid to be walking alone - especially when half the town's fighters were at a meeting for the second guard fighters - but she really needed to clear her head. And she needed to get out of the cottage. She thought that the fresh air might do her some good, all things considering.

The forest reminded her a bit of home, and with a stab of homesickness, she almost found herself wondering if she would find Jacob hiding in the trees. Part of her knew she was being ridiculous, and foolish, wandering in there alone. Edward certain would not approve. But she felt herself drawn to the trees somehow, and stepped through them carefully, trying to be cautious.

He whiffed the air, then grinned as he caught scent of someone. Smelled young. Female. He had a flicker of deja-vu, but it was fleeting and not worth his attention.

He moved through the trees, silent despite his size, until he could see her. He thought about just pouncing, but as before, he wanted to smell the fear, to feel her panic, to hear her screams.

So he put on his best polite voice, and he spoke quietly from the shadow of a tree. "Hello, miss."

Bella jumped when she heard a voice, head spinning frantically to find the source. She eyed the man warily.

"Hello," she all but mumbled, unable to shake the memory of what had happened the last time she had spoken to a stranger. And with Edward preoccupied with the meeting...

She tried to shake off her fear, keeping her gaze focused and even. It was entirely possible that she was overreacting and he was just a new arrival, after all. There was no sense being rude.

"And how are you this evening?" he asked as he moved out of the shadows, taking a few small steps closer to her. He grinned, pointed teeth exposed a little, though perhaps hard to see in the darkness.

Closer, she smelled better, and his grin broadened in anticipation. He wondered if she was much of a screamer ... and thought he'd like to find out.
