Jayne grunted a little in amusement when he saw River. It was just like her to be here too, weren't it? He himself felt a bit like a ruttin' yo yo. Hadn't he been here already once? He figured he'd avoid the hun dan in charge for as long as he could, reasoned that he'd be better off that way.

"Ain't gonna find no answers in that water, little one," he warned peevishly.

River stiffened briefly, but did not look up, her mind whirring in silent contemplation. So Jayne was here. Was Mal? Was Mal chaotic enough to warrant and upheaval? Simon certainly wasn't. Jayne was though, that didn't surprise her.

"Jayne," she murmured softly, still watching the ripples. "No cohesion on either plain. Would slip between the cracks and get stuck in the middle were there one. There isn't."

She paused, thoughtful. "But there will be," she said, a small crinkle appearing in her forehead.

Jayne's brows rose and then knit them together, trying to suss out what the moon brain had just said. Weren't never gonna come a time when he was gonna understand this one.

"Right," he said, "'F you've got a plan, you'd best be sharing it with the rest of us, dong ma? I ain't really got a hankerin' t'run into some of the folk here 'f I don't have to."

He was already feeling a mite twitchy and he did consider visiting some of the shops to see what he could find by way of camouflage or disguise. They had to have something. Then again, he'd probably run into someone he'd met before anyhow. Tricky.

She paused, and nodded her head as though she'd been anticipating that before turning away from the water to face Jayne. She blinked at him for a moment, and then slid her bottom lip underneath her top lip in a vain attempt to keep her emotions steeled.

"Hadn't been planning," she told Jayne quietly. "Mourning. Mourning the loss of sun."

Her eyes drifted up to the clouds, and she exhaled a shaky breath, not expecting Jayne to understand what she was saying. But she'd wanted to say it anyway.

"Perhaps the portals are functioning?" she offered, gesturing in the vague direction she remembered the portals being from her last few times being here. Though she doubted it. This didn't feel like the sort of task where the portals would be working.
