An Innocent Burden: A Poem

A woman screams,

“Help” because she can’t call 911.

A thousand ears hear her but not one hand

dials the number that could have saved her life.

The owners of ears remain transfixed
behind shut windows in dark halls and soft beds.

They convince themselves that they are safe,

and yet this woman

keeps screaming

from within the seclusion of her own home.

This is dark and very real,reflecting that "For evil to flourish it only needs good people to do nothing" (paraphrased).The contrast between the woman's terror and the cosiness of other people's lives going on around them is caught well. I think the last three lines pack a punch.
