MPG vs GPM

Researching cars right now and one of my big issues is fuel economy. The auto industry seems to be having a race to see which company can put out the most 40 MPG vehicles. This has made vehicle decisions difficult for me as many big MPG increases are not yet released but coming out soon (Subaru Impreza at 36 and Mazda3 at 40 this fall, for example ( Read more... )

of note, perhaps: i have 126K on my Honda Civic Hybrid and have yet to lose battery efficiency. i'm still getting 47 mpg summer with non-careful driving, and 53-ish with careful driving (both lower in winter).

so i quibble with your assumption "factor in battery replacement" right now, though who knows what could happen by 200K (and yes i do intend to keep my car that long, if possible).

I would love to bike commute. If only professional level jobs were okay with me coming in sweaty from a bike commute. :) There certainly is a massive amount of savings to be had both financially and in not consuming limited natural resources, not to mention fitness.

I put in lots of road miles on my bike every week but I never consider it to no where. I think I'll stop riding when something I see during my ride doesn't make me think or feel inspired or drop away my angst.
