It is about this rich white woman in the victorian era who is put on rest cure and sees a woman in the pattern of the wallpaper of her room. It is unclear at the end whether she has lost her mind or has finally come to her senses.
rest cure was in vogue at the turn of the century as a means to pathologize women and suppress them. Women were prescribed to go to bed and not read or write or do anything else in the public sphere if they seemed to be too anxious or hysterical. Symptoms that required this cure were: depression, euphoria, excessive sex drive, low sex drive, wanting to vote, being overwhelmed by children, being angry, being bored, being unhappy, being too happy...
Geez, you and me, they would have so most definitely sent(enced) us to bed! Oh wait, I would have been a sharecropper and you would probably have been excluded from entering the country during this period, so never mind...

hey, it's charlie from the class. I have deliberately stayed out of the e-mail kerfuffle, though I too have enjoyed observing it, and I just wanted to say hi.

(I saw you on heyiya's journal.) :)
