River's feelings here are, unsurprisingly enough, complicated.
The first major aspect is empathy, with a lot of compassion and identifying mixed in. Being a student at the Academy and being a daughter of the Company aren't the same thing, of course, but they're absolutely close enough for River to identify with Elle. She's frustrated on Elle's behalf, and angry at the Company, and she wants Elle to get out of there; she's frustrated at Elle for not being ready to do so, even though she also knows it's not that easy and that it's all Elle's ever known, which is a lot different than River's situation was ( ... )
