River slipped out of her shoes and carefully paced the room, counting steps, calculating the space around the Gate. She knew there was time before the jump party returned, she'd watched them go. As per protocol, the Marines on guard in the Gate Room readied themselves, weapons ready to come up if the call came in that the team was coming in hot, as the the chevrons locked, and the wormhole whooshed into existence ( ... )

River followed the light at a safe distance, not wanting to be blinded by it but not wanting to get lost in darkness. She knew eventually he would notice and be upset, but couldn't think of that now, couldn't think of what to say when the moment came... all she knew was that she had to follow.

His steps slow until McKay has not only pulled away, but rounded the corner, leaving Sheppard relatively alone with his tag-along. He doesn't stop walking, nor does he turn to look at her, but he does speak loud enough for her to hear.

"Is there something I can do for you, Miss Tam? Or can it wait the half an hour I'm gonna need to get cleaned up?"

"She gets anxious when you are away" muttered softly as she followed. Then she blinked and forced her feet to stop moving "It can wait." The darkness was fading now, though he still glowed brightly, a candle flame of warmth in her mind that she felt even when she looked away from him.
