Tangled thoughts on the visceral vs the think-y in vids

I started writing this post last night at 3am, so it’s really not the most coherent thing ever, but I thought I’d finish it today and post it anyway.

Having just got back into the whole LJ thing, I’ve been catching up on posts that other people have made recently about vidding. And I have also been getting back into actually making vids (or, a vid) ( Read more... )

I think it comes down a little to people are different (and the more verbal/intellectual tend to write more meta). Did you see lim’s recent post in which she concluded that viding was most like dancing? Because intuitively I agree with that and also when I’m watching dance it is all about music, mood, pace, motion and rhythm. There are narrative dances and even polemical ones but those aspects are very very secondary to me with dance. Vids though I seem to watch with my movie-brain and my lyric obssessive’s-brain as much as my dance brain and the abstract or purely emotional aesthetic doesn’t seem to be enough. It’s not so much that a vid needs something as specific as an argument or a story but it does need to be about *something,* have some central point or theme to it.

I don't see my vidding as a way of making an argument either. I might be trying to show or say something, but it's not about making a point for me.

It was very interesting to read your thoughts on how you used to “translate a piece of music or a song into a visual experience” and now you feel a bit differently. Almost like vids as a dual sensory experience. Very cool thoughts.
