When did "fail" become a noun? Is that a recent development in the useage of that word, or has it always been used that way and I've only just started to notice?

I could be wrong, but I think it's fairly recent (like the last couple of years) internet slang that made "fail" into a noun.

I haven't ever seen it as a noun. I can't come up with a sentence in my head in which it would be one, either.

Neither had I until very recently, I think its just a recent development that's sprung up on the internet...

See this, which I found: http://www.slate.com/id/2202262/pagenum/all/ !

It's been like that for probably at least two years. I know it crept up in my vocabulary as such about a year or so ago.
