Since his eventful arrival, Wolfram had spent the following days trying his best not to be unreasonably angry with Yuuri. In his opinion, he'd done very well in keeping to himself for the time being. Still, he could not help but feel there was something very wrong with his fiancé and Wolfram had reason to suspect the journals. For all his talk about how much he had learned from his own and making friends with people, Yuuri had not so much as touched it within the past few days. Had Wolfram thought Yuuri was squeamish over blood, he would have expected that the reason ( ... )

Yuuri heard Wolfram's voice just as he was searching for more rocks and bowed his head, expecting to get yelled.

When no yelling came, he took a deep breath and waited for Wolfram to get closer to speak. Just as he decided that, he felt it again.

'Foolish, simple beasts think to cross me with their pathetic displays, they will be punished! Who dares, who dares...'

Before Yuuri knew it, he was on the ground, clutching his head with both hands.

"YUURI!"

Wolfram was by Yuuri's side in an instant, trying to steady him. "Yuuri, I - what's going on? Is it painful? Don't talk if it's too difficult."

It was a pounding headache and the Maou just wouldn't shut up and the blood smell was as bad as back in the room, and Yuuri bit his lip to keep from whimpering.

"Hurts," he managed, squeezing his eyes shut. "Making me... all weird."

He was still on his knees and pressed a hand hard against his temple while the other reached for the pendant. 'Think of something else,' he ordered himself. 'Baseball and Shin Makoku and bloodbloodbloodblood-'

Lessa was doing her nightly walks. The darkness hid her from the bright sun, which reminded all to acutely what had failed to come from between with her. But those thoughts raised more questions the Weyrwoman couldn't answer either.

How could she come out of between and not Ramoth? F'lar would be worried again, that she and Ramoth hadn't returned when the Thread was done falling. Was it as that demon Valgaav had said? She was no longer on Pern?

But something deep within her roused her from her depressing and shocking thoughts.

"HELP!"

The call wasn't something she would have answered if she were still in Ruatha, before the Search, but Lessa sprinted toward the voice, suddenly a furious wave of purpose engulfing her.

It wasn't long before the black-haired woman found a blond-headed boy supporting another dark-haired boy.

"What's wrong?" She asked quietly. "I heard you calling and..." She gestured at the supported boy, her gray eyes obviously concerned.

It didn't matter who it was, anybody who was passing would do. Yuuri was in a terrible state, and Wolfram wasn't sure what to do or where to go. He wasn't a healer. He looked at the woman who had come rushing towards them. He bit back gratitude.

"You!" he said roughly, "my fiance - there's something wrong, I don't know what - do you have any experience in the healing profession?"

It was a long shot, but Wolfram was desperate. Yuuri meant everything to Shin Makoku.

Wolfram was too loud. The voice was too loud. The blood was too much. Yuuri pushed away from Wolfram and doubled over on the ground.

He wanted to kill something. And it terrified him.

For just a split second, Wolfram might have seen a hint of the blue aura that usually surrounded the Maou. Then, it disappeared in the blink of an eye.

Lessa stared at the boy. She felt anger rolling off him in waves, and struggled to keep her temper.

"I've done basic things," She replied, trying to keep calm. Who knows what the black-haired boy was going through? His hair reminded her so much of F'lar. "Is he bleeding?" She regretted her numbweed and bandages were lost with Ramoth.

Peter was hesitant about going back to the clinic. The new doctor was getting on his last nerve, but he had to remain calm, at peace, not let it bother him. At least he was working upstairs for the most part, and not where he could bother Peter. He shouldn't let a jack ass get in the way of helping people, saving people, doing what he does best.

He was cleaning a table at the center of the room when he heard shouting outside and banging on his door. Peter dropped the cloth, and quickly ran toward the door, prying it open, and coming face to face with a group.

One of them didn't look too good.

"Come inside," he said, not bothering to waste a second. "Put him on the table."

Yuuri stirred slightly when Wolfram reluctantly placed him on the table. His dark eyes fluttered open and he looked around, dazed.

"Where am I?" His voice didn't sound like normal. His throat actually hurt a little, but he definitely didn't smell blood anymore.

Wolfram placed Yuuri on the table. He was looking a little better, or perhaps Wolfram was a little too hopeful.

"You're a healer?" asked Wolfram, just to make sure. He wasn't going to let somebody unprofessional deal with Yuuri in this state. "I don't know what's wrong with him. He just collapsed in the park. There's something wrong with his head."

Wolfram's explaining was all very jittery, because he still didn't know what was wrong with Yuuri. He just knew he wanted it over. Yuuri's voice was a surprise to him, and he edged as close as possible, reluctant to leave his side. "We're at the clinic," he said, struggling to keep his voice normal.

As always, there was a hint of anger within Wolfram, Lessa noted. But he also felt very protective of Yuuri. Lessa moved away slowly from the table. The Healer would know what to do.

Then, Lessa detected some angry, crazy emotions upstairs. She glanced at the ceiling of the clinic. It was like a storm cloud of negative emotions.

Returning to Yuuri's problem, and trying to be helpful, the black-headed woman said, "He was a lot worse in the park, though. He's less restless, he kept shouting something about blood..."

Yuuri smiled, but it was a nervous one. "It's a really long story, but uh, sometimes, when I get some really strong emotion, I kinda turn into this other person... he's the Maou. He has all this crazy power and usually goes on about justice and stuff... from what people tell me.

"I don't remember what happens when I turn into him. Like I said, it's hard to explain. But," Yuuri paused. "I think he was mad about the blood. He hates when anyone gets hurt for no reason."

"It isn't that long a story, wimp," said Wolfram, relieved. "So he was trying to manifest but couldn't, because of this place?"

He clenched a fist. If with all of the his maryoku, the Maou was unable to manifest, what hope did Wolfram have in regaining his powers?

"Manifest?" Lessa asked dumbly as she watched Wolfram. She fingered the tail of her black braid thoughtfully, "Has this "Maou" been Impressed by Yuuri?" The thought of the wonderful Impression of Ramoth made Lessa sad, but she fought it off. At least Yuuri was well. "I didn't get the impression that the Maou was a dragon."

Lessa shifted her weight, the thought of dragons immediately made her long for F'lar and Ramoth. "At least I hope not. He seems like a very violent dragon."

"Don't take this the wrong way or anything, but - " Peter bit his lip. He wasn't a psychiatrist, a psychologist, or any of that psych-stuff. Only a nurse with basic medical training who looks after dying people. Yet, when someone openly admits they have another personality called the 'Maou - "Have you ever considered that you might have MPD? Um, multiple personality disorder."

Didn't help if the blond boy also believed there was another person living inside Yuuri, and the woman didn't looked phased at all.

They went straight from the clinic back to the inn. Yuuri actually found that life without the journals was actually quite pleasant. Of course he didn't know what was going on, but that was all right. Surely, Wolfram would have told him if something important was going on.

However, roughly a week later, he awoke from a sound sleep knowing that he absolutely needed to see the journal. He walked to the room where he'd left it and dug it out from the drawer.

Blood. More blood than before, everywhere.

That was the last thing Yuuri remembered. As soon as he focused on the page, the Maou awoke.

Usually very few things could rouse a sleeping Wolfram before his brain decided it was time to wake up. He awoke feeling disgruntled and tired and spent all of thirty seconds trying to fathom why this might be the case before he realised Yuuri wasn't in the room.

He was out of bed in an instant and grabbed the sword he kept handy by the side of the bed. He realised his nightwear wasn't appropriate for a fight, but right now there wasn't much other choice.

A thump. Wolfram followed the noise, silently as he could. He sighed in relief when he saw Yuuri's figure and was all prepared to start yelling when he understood that something was wrong again. He smelt blood.

"Yuuri!" he cried out, "it's happening again?!"

Yuuri's voice sounded fairly the same - a little serious for him, but the pitch hadn't lowered enough to make a difference - when he turned and gave Wolfram a soft smile. "Sorry. Did I wake you?"

He bent down to where the book was lying. "I dropped it, that's probably why. I was just... surprised, that's all." He held the book out to Wolfram to examine. "Worse than before, isn't it?"

As Wolfram looked at the book, Yuuri's eyes narrowed slightly and darted to the door.

Wolfram stared at Yuuri, trying to decide what was continuing to happen. "It doesn't matter."

Wolfram took the book and grimaced. It wasn't the blood that disturbed him - what soldier hadn't seen blood before? It was simply the effect it was having on Yuuri. "I told you not to use this thing anymore," he said firmly, still looking down at the book and flicking through the pages with a now bloodied hand. "It's not good for you."
