He would have managed to ignore his name, so lost in his thoughts was he, but the second part snagged his attention. His head jerked up, eyes widening again and partially covered by long hair that he couldn't be bothered to brush aside.

"What? You can't -- " He caught Dick's lead here, lowered his own voice. "But you didn't do it!"

"It was an accident, Impulse. Nobody 'did' it." Dick raked a hand through his own hair. "And with things how they are" with Roy, with Arsenal "it's better that I take the blame for this until Batman has all the evidence." Nightwing paused, looking up the trail to their house, the porch light on, as ever, beckoning them home. "And besides, Impulse can be too easily traced back to you... to Jilly."

He had a protest ready on his tongue, but the reminder of Jilly silenced him. He looked away guiltily to stare at the path under his feet. How could he have forgotten about that? Not only had he killed someone, but with everyone so angry lately -- they'd be angry at her too.

"Y-yeah..." he finally managed, a reluctant agreement. "But... what evidence? I mean -- it happened. There's no... they won't..."

His voice broke a little there, and he had to pull down the goggles to rub at his eyes. "Guilty," was the only mumble that made it out clearly.

Foot prints, visible marks (admittedly, there were more on Nightwing than on Impulse), blood pools, blood splatter, from here on things got rather a bit more morbid. Dick would spare him the lecture on forensics for some another time, because right now, the boy needed reassurance, comfort. Jilly would be way better at this than he was, but for now, the hand he placed on top of Bart's head would have to suffice ( ... )

It's not often Bart hears that he did good, and the news did serve to brighten him... a little. He sniffled, just once, it was probably just an oncoming cold of course, and nodded.

"Well... you saved mine, too. So..." Well, they weren't even, he couldn't say that. Dick was still taking the fall for him.

He moved forward then, wrapping his arms around Dick and burying his face in his side. "Thanks, Jimmy."
