"What?" he repeated aloud this time, blinking back in confusion at that first, no wait, everything she just said. "MJ, you were the first person I told, way back when I first started! And you never dated Harry, I would remember-"
Oh. Oh holy crap. Was she from before? Had she secretly dated Harry? For a moment, he was paralyzed, not sure if he should continue.
"You never told me." MJ's tone is almost hurt as she steps back. "I've asked you to Homecoming - and we even went on a date - but you didn't tell me anything."
God, what kind of crazy thing was going on right now? MJ bit her lip, running a hand through her hair. "What do you mean you'd remember? I've never really told you about him... not by name, at least. He's the guy I'd been dating for a while, even though I liked someone else. We've had conversations about this before, I swear!"
Why wasn't he remembering? Was this part of the alternate universe Spidey was talking about? She didn't think much about it before, but she sorta-kinda wanted out now.
Okay, MJ looked really, really freaked, and Spidey couldn't blame her. If she didn't know, there was nothing he could do about it. It was probably best to get this out of the way now, before someone else told her.
"Look, I know this is going to sound weird," he said, slowly. "But when I first arrived here, even though I was in costume, people knew who I was. Apparently, in some universes, people make movies about me. Crazy stuff.
"So they just carried on telling me everything about myself, and sooner or later, someone's going to use my real name. I guess you should hear it from me first... since things are different between the places we came from. Maybe events played out differently."
With a sigh, he tucked a thumb under his mask, getting ready to take it off. It was weird, but he was actually nervous, when he shouldn't be. MJ had been surprised but excited when he'd told her the first time... hopefully, this version of her would react the same.
His mask was fully off, in his hands, and he looked her in the eye, waiting for her
The explanation wasn't as crazy as the fact that he was actually taking off his mask. MJ wasn't sure exactly what to do -- she wanted to know who he was! -- but something told her she should try and respect Spidey's wishes. But what if he wanted to tell her?
She didn't bother to look up for a while. When she finally stared up at him, she furrowed her eyebrows for a moment (he didn't seem that familiar at first, but if she imagined the spiky hair not being as spiky)...
"Peter Parker?"
If there was ever a time for going "FML," MJ was sure this was definitely it. Mentally beating herself up, she pressed her hands to her forehead. No wonder! No wonder Peter had beaten Spider-Man to their date... no wonder he seemed so awkward...
Oh god. FML. "... Wow," She finally, slowly smiled. "This is... sorta-kinda unexpected."
He winced, just a bit, when she said his name. It sounded like she was still angry. It probably looked dumb.
"Yeah?" He peeked over at her, and she was smiling. Geez, girls were so weird. "I wouldn't think so... I mean, you saw what happened on the field trip with the spider, right?"
