Renji hadn't even waited for the ink to dry on Rukia's latest entry, and he was rushing out the door to the clinic. He should have known. She wasn't doing well, and he wasn't there to help her. What an idiot he was!
He made it to the clinic in record time and very rudely questioned staff until he found Rukia's room. She was unconscious, and Renji tried not to make too many noises clomping around the room.
"Rukia?" he asked carefully. "Hey, it's gonna be all right." Why did he say that? Whenever he made promises like that, he could never keep them.
The nightmare had left Rukia with a stabbing wound through her chest, though fortunately it had been too low to affect her heart. Being in the clinic had helped the workers tend to her not long afterwords. Blood loss had left her skin pale as she quietly rested, the dark color of her hair contrasting the surrounding sheets sharply.

She didn't move, didn't wake, but still Renji waited. The sun set outside the room's window, and still he waited. He only got up a few times, to pace, to get some water. Otherwise, he waited.
Renji fell asleep in that chair, despite his best attempts not to. His face was in his hands, and his elbows were propped up by his knees, so that Renji was leaning forward as he lost conciousness.
She was behind those bars again, and Renji internally raged at himself. There was nothing he could do, no way to save her. She was destined to die tomorrow, and everything he tried had failed. Rukia wouldn't even speak to him anymore, so he stomped away like an angry child
( ... )
Rukia's sleeping form remained still, though her face twitched slightly. The noise had taken her at least somewhat from her slumber, her eyes gently opening but a crack. Barely seen violet eyes were clouded and unfocused, confused and still laced with faint pain that could be felt through the medications. Only barely did her head move, gently turning the slightest to look towards him.
"...Ren...ji." Her voice was a ghost of a whisper. The word came out mumbled, another sign of her incoherency and exhaustion.
