It felt like she had been crying for days. She sat at the kitchen table, head buried in her arms as she trembled silently, one hand clutching her long hair. Lelouch couldn't see her face, and she didn't want him too. Flushed, stained with the hot tears that were falling unceasingly. There was a sniffle now and then, and the fist in her hair seemed to tighten a bit with each one.
There was no anger in the girl for once. No resentment, no fight; simply hurt. How many times had she said to someone in the journals, 'I can't imagine what I would do if Minako were gone'? How many times had she tried to sympathize with someone's loss by imagining herself alone in this large manor? Now it was a reality, and it was so crushing she could scarcely comprehend it. Her heart, her head, every fiber of her being hurt and yearned to have Minako back

Lelouch was a liar by nature, but he knew this was not the time for lies, but the time for truth. For both their sakes. He could lie, he could say he knew they'd find Minako, that the girl would be fine, and she and Rei would be happily together again... but that would be cruel

Rei tilted her head a little, just enough to see over her arm as Lelouch placed the teacup in front of her. Her eyes were red and swollen, her face blotchy. But after hours of crying, that was only natural. She couldn't remember the last time she'd wept so hard for someone

Lelouch smiled weakly at her, though there was a little relief in his expression to see her at least drinking something again. Though he was not as close to Minako as he had once been, from what he had gathered, nor as close as Rei was, he had still thought of her fondly, as a friend, and considered Rei in much the same way, especially after she had forcibly taken care of him. Minako's loss and Rei's pain, however, were more than just another isolated tragedy. It resonated him, that panic in her eyes, that desperation, and as they had searched so very frantically, he had come to the terrible and painful conclusion of just how desperate, just how crazed he himself had been when he had lost Nunnally again. He could no longer bring himself to deny that she was gone, and the only thing allowing him to hold himself together was the knowledge that Rei needed him to help her from falling apart, whether she realized it or not.

"Hino-san, I... I'm sorry."
