He walked along the street, his hands stuffed in his pockets, and Den at his side. The company of Den -- and Al, who had taken to tagging along for the night, not that Ed minded in the least -- was nice.
In the distance, he spotted the pirate on the bench. It took a moment to process -- the red head of hair, and the wings. He'd been around Ba'ast so often that his first thought was that it was her, before he realized that Ba'ast never dressed that way. "Al, that's..." He mumbled, as it clicked in his mind. ( ... )

The walks at night, though, were something he had come to love. Sometimes, it was almost like they were on the road again, traveling through Amestris - admittedly, with an additional canine companion, but it was close enough - and it was these times when Al felt the distance that had developed between them fade and vanish.

And Aidan, that silly little bard she loved like the baby brother she never had and Avery, his blood splattered ( ... )

Den seemed to sense the strange negativity in the air. After all, an animals senses were much greater than a humans. He must have realized the danger. He'd stopped in his tracks a good distance away and the hair on his back was standing on edges as the dog hunched down. Even if Al couldn't quite see, just yet, the exact predicament that Ed had just walked right into, then Den's behavior was a give away ( ... )

He couldn't seem to look away from that dark hole at the end of the barrel, levered at his brother's throat. Still, he managed to draw a shaky breath when Ed spoke, and responded in a voice that was surprisingly steady, if very quiet.
"No," he said softly, and was glad when Ed took those two steps back, closer to him. Closer made it easier to do something. Anything. "No, I don't think I should."
