Usually, once the sun had gone down, Ed went for a walk with one of the dogs. It was easy to clear his mind out in the fresh air, the silence of the streets, before he went to bed. The cooler air was nice, even on his automail(which sometimes got too hot for his liking during the day). It wasn't as though he had all that much on his mind anymore, though -- somewhere in the back of his subconscious, the disappearances were there, that worry over them. But nothing had happened lately and he'd since filed the thought away, for now.

He walked along the street, his hands stuffed in his pockets, and Den at his side. The company of Den -- and Al, who had taken to tagging along for the night, not that Ed minded in the least -- was nice.

In the distance, he spotted the pirate on the bench. It took a moment to process -- the red head of hair, and the wings. He'd been around Ba'ast so often that his first thought was that it was her, before he realized that Ba'ast never dressed that way. "Al, that's..." He mumbled, as it clicked in his mind. ( ... )

Works for me - I ended up being gone all day. armored_alchemy August 15 2009, 05:48:49 UTC
Al had been working to spend more time with Ed, it was true - he'd realized, after their...admittedly, sort of awkward, talk and subsequent falling asleep, how much he really missed the closeness they'd always had traveling around together. He had drawn the line at sneaking into Ed's room, even if they pretty much had always slept in the same room - but he knew a certain sky-pirate who probably not be happy to find him in his brother's room.

The walks at night, though, were something he had come to love. Sometimes, it was almost like they were on the road again, traveling through Amestris - admittedly, with an additional canine companion, but it was close enough - and it was these times when Al felt the distance that had developed between them fade and vanish.

So when Ed took off, Al followed, trotting to catch up with Den at his side. His brow creased with worry - Apollo didn't look that great, and neither he nor Ed were healers of any sort. They'd have to make sure she got into the clinic as soon as possible.

The woman hadn't received any dire wounds during her search, but she had stopped caring for herself properly -- and that was a problem in itself. Apollo didn't know any first aid, but she had still tried to stitch up a wound by herself. It was a poor job, of course, and made worse by the lack of protection. And even though she was back in the city now, surrounded by potential heroes, the pirate didn't want their help. Only his.

But those things weren't the cause of her pain. It was the ache in her heart, the dark clouds in her mind and the change in her soul that was damaging.

No more, no more. All the things she had been holding onto until now, what were they for? All the things she loved, why? Everything until now has been stacking itself on top of a toothpick. She had never really gotten over her twin sister's death. How could she? It wasn't just a friend dying then, it was a part of her soul. An extension of her body. And Aidan, that silly little bard she loved like the baby brother she never had and Avery, his blood splattered ( ... )

He froze the second she pulled the gun on him. For a second, he stopped breathing. That malicious look on her face... He'd seen it so many times over the years. But he couldn't figure out why this was directed at him. Why was Apollo pointing her gun at his throat? So suddenly, with such confidence and murderous intent. Ed couldn't understand where it was coming from.

Den seemed to sense the strange negativity in the air. After all, an animals senses were much greater than a humans. He must have realized the danger. He'd stopped in his tracks a good distance away and the hair on his back was standing on edges as the dog hunched down. Even if Al couldn't quite see, just yet, the exact predicament that Ed had just walked right into, then Den's behavior was a give away ( ... )

There was a low growl coming from Den, but Al didn't need that as any sort of indication. He'd almost pulled even with Ed when Apollo had pulled the gun, and he'd stopped dead in his tracks, behind and off to the side. All the breath had seemed to go rushing out of him at once, and his heartbeat thundered in his ears.

He couldn't seem to look away from that dark hole at the end of the barrel, levered at his brother's throat. Still, he managed to draw a shaky breath when Ed spoke, and responded in a voice that was surprisingly steady, if very quiet.

"No," he said softly, and was glad when Ed took those two steps back, closer to him. Closer made it easier to do something. Anything. "No, I don't think I should."
