Penelo's chest heaved as she tore through the woods, ramming through branches and ducking vines. She had just told Vaan how dangerous the jungle was. Just told him! But somewhere, somewhere in the root of Penelo's heart was the seed of dread, knowing that somehow, Agrias, her knight, her mama was not well.

Agrias had sheltered Penelo under her wing almost right off the boat. She had been there in doubt, in triumph, and her familiar, rich laugh echoed off the bakery walls. Wherever Penelo's best, and worst, memories were, the knight had been faithfully by her side. To not have that warm presence beside her, to not be able to tug that golden braid as it swayed out of the door... Penelo wouldn't think of it.

She just crushed her bag of potions close and ran, soon finding the girl she knew as Haruhi, and the knight she had come to know as her mother.

"Haruhi!"

Penelo.

Haruhi shot up, gesturing wildly for the girl to get over and pull out her potions.

"She's right here! Right here!"

She stepped back, giving Penelo enough room to work. She didn't know what else to do. Haruhi wanted so badly for the knight to be alive. She'd been wishing, ordering, commanding, using every fiber of her angry little mind to try and get the holy knight to at least open her eyes, but nothing had happened. She had no healing powers and no magical balms. All Haruhi could do was sit and wait and watch.

"Make her better, okay? Just... get her to wake up..." she mumbled.

Kyon ran as fast as he could. He ran, and he ran, and he ran, blade at his back, a blade that Agrias his trained him how to use, taken hours to teach him, an average teenage boy with average ability at best to use like he had been training all his life with it. But as fast as he ran, as hard as he ran, he knew, he just knew, somehow, he wouldn't get there on time. Not the way Haruhi was talking.

Maybe it was the note in Haruhi's voice. Maybe it was the fire. Maybe it was that sinking feeling in his stomach.

Maybe... just maybe... he was wrong. He hoped he was wrong. But something told him he wasn't.

He heard the shouts, saw the gesturing, and he felt a little sicker inside, but he pressed on, pressed his body to his limits.

It wasn't sure yet. She could still be okay.

Please God let her be alright...

Penelo dropped to her knees, bile rising up her throat. Swallowing back the taste of lunch from earlier, Penelo bent to cradle Agrias' head in her lap. She could hardly recognize her; there was so much blood and exposed muscle.

"Hi, Mama..." She tried to keep her voice steady and familiar.

A hand rested atop her chest. It was still and sunken slightly. She told herself it was the ridges of the armor. Hands fumbling, Penelo uncorked the blue bottles she had taken from Larsa's room. She knew he wouldn't be cross if he knew why she stole them.

"Here... drink this down for me, please..." She poured the liquid atop her parted lips, where it simply rolled uselessly away, some gathering in her mouth, some dribbling down her cheeks in Penelo's haste.

Haruhi crossed her arms, still looking for the world like a petulant little child as she waited. Why wasn't Agrias drinking it? Why wasn't it working? Why was she being so careless? I mean, hell, the stuff was spilling! But the Brigade chief bit her lip and didn't say a word. She couldn't bring herself to hassle the girl - not when she knew all the answers herself already.

She waited a moment more before she couldn't stand it. She knelt beside Penelo, her mouth still stubbornly shut - Buddha and whoever else forbid this jungle's eyes see her sob - and took one of her hands, bringing it up so it touched her forehead above her eyes, squeezed shut to try and keep the tears from coming out, too.

She took a deep breath, her shoulders shuddering a little. Idiot, she thought. But she couldn't say it. Not when Agrias had been so much more to them.

So. That was it. She really was gone.

It was ironic, in a way. After all she'd been here through, after all the attacks, after all the chaos, after all the transformations... she had died out here alone. And she deserved so much more than that, more than a fate like this, more than...

The boy closed his eyes for a moment, and bowed his head towards the knight. Maybe she'd find her way back to them someday. Maybe she was going to whatever Heaven existed in her world. Maybe she was even back in that world now, protecting her beloved princess...

And with that reminder of who he had to protect, who he had to keep together, he knelt quietly behind his brigade chief and slipped his arms around her wordlessly, just holding her close.

Penelo's throat constricted. Unlike Haruhi, she was fast to let herself cry, begging the woman on her lap to wake up.

"Agrias, Mama, please, wake up... You've been through so much before, please, open your eyes-"

She doubled her body over the fallen knight, weeping with her whole body. She remembered the many scared nights after she had been raped, creeping in beside the older woman, afternoons nestled close, having her hair braided. She had taken it for granted, so for granted, and now the same woman who had sheltered her and loved her lay on her lap, silent and still.

Penelo let out a pathetic cry, racking her lungs and making her thin limbs quiver.

She started, at first. Haruhi hadn't expected Kyon to do anything like that, and the Brigade chief couldn't help but react as violently as she did.

It was part grief, part surprise, part pent-up frustration - everything wrong with the world and everything right that was supposed to be but wasn't. It was grief and loss and anger, strength and vulnerability, fear. And it started to get weaker with each thud of her fists against his chest, as the tears started worming their way down her cheeks. Haruhi couldn't say a word. Not without whining, not without crying, not without showing the goddamn world that it had gotten to her.

Agrias would have wanted her to be strong. Agrias would have helped her stop crying. Agrias would have... she would've known what to do. Haruhi didn't, now. She was at a total loss, and all she could do was sit there with her head against Kyon's chest, leaking tears onto his shirtfront.
