WHO: The White Rabbit Kyon and the Cheshire Cat Asahina Mikuru WHAT: The aftermath of Wonderland Shenanigans WHERE: The Palace The SOS Clubhouse WHEN: Day 221
Mikuru was lying on her bed, hugging a pillow and staring blankly at the ceiling. The departure of the Halloween curse, and the resulting flood of memories of what she'd done, had left her feeling completely empty. It wasn't Kyon-kun's fault, or Suzumiya-san's fault, or Agrias-san's fault. It was hers. She should have been able to resist. Even...even like that, she should have been able to do something.
But you didn't want to, did you, said a treacherous voice in the back of her head. Even if you could have done something, you wouldn't. You enjoyed it.
Mikuru bit her lip. It wasn't true, it just wasn't-
Then she heard Kyon's voice. She listened silently, not responding for a few minutes. Then, slowly, she moved to the door and unlocked it.
The boy waited patiently but uncertainly in the silence. He understood if Asahina-san, as shy and demure as she was, didn't want to outright tell him to go away, so he knew, at one point, he'd have to-- at the very latest, when Haruhi got back home, anyway. But at the same time, he couldn't just... leave things like this. Just knocking on the door after having brought up some tea didn't seem like enough. Even if he had to have a one-sided conversation with through a door to apologize properly to her... well, if that was what it took, that was what it took.
And he was about ready to sit down to do just that when he heard some slight rustling behind the door, then feet padding to the door, and, finally, the click of the lock unlocking. Mustering up an uncertain smile, Kyon spoke softly, hoping for some kind of response, not sure whether she would open the door, like she would have if she were her usual self, or if she wanted him to be the one to open it, to initiate the first face-to-face contact they'd had since the curse ended."
Mikuru watched the door for a moment, not speaking. She couldn't just let him stay out there, but... did she really want to see him right now? A part of her knew that she'd have to face this, accept it, and move on, but it felt... it was still too soon.
But what was she scared of? This was Kyon. Her friend. Her protector.
Nice job of "protecting" you he's done so far, the voice sneered. She bit her lip, and - if only to spite that voice - opened the door.
"Hello, Kyon-kun..." she said softly, trying to force a smile.
