He should have been there.
What was he even thinking, going off on his own to search for more guns, not even thinking that he should follow the others... he had more faith in Apollo than he would ever admit. But as good as she was, Avery was still dead. It wasn't her fault; it wasn't anyone's fault, but that didn't make it hurt any less.
He blinked his eyes and hoped no one noticed how upset he had become. Bastian was supposed to be tough, stoic, a true fighter, but as much as he had complained and teased Avery before, he really liked the kid, and this just wasn't right.
Bastian threw back another shot of rum and winced. He filled his glass again and raised it in Renya's direction. "One more for the kid," he said, already starting to slur his speech a little, and drank it down quickly.

Oh god, Avery.
Aidan squeezed his eyes shut for a moment and tried to hold back the tears. He had cried enough, more tears wouldn't help any. More tears wouldn't bring Avery back. It was so weird, saying Avery all the time. Avery, Avery, Avery . . . Because if he said Barf, he knew he'd cry even harder. After all, Barf was who listened to him play whenever he asked, Barf was who cleaned up after him, Barf was who bickered with him, told him he was stupid and oh god Aidan never used his real name except . . . Well, that really wasn't anyone's business. Maybe he should have switched to Barf ( ... )
